A/c Noise--belt Question

The wife's truck came home making an awful racket.

On investigation, there were sparks flying from the A/C compressor and the A/C pulley was flopping.

I removed the serpentine belt and replaced it with the spare 67" one that I carry in my truck, thereby eliminating the A/C pump.

Cranked her up, noise gone.

Is the A/C problem something I can rebuild, clutch or bearings, maybe; or, am I going to need a new pump??

Also, what is the correct length/part number serpentine belt for her I/Cooled engine minus the A/C.

Is Dayco #5080640 64 inch the correct one??

If not, what is??

I would like to get back my fifty dollar emergency belt, in case I have trouble.

Thanks.

A Couple More Questions

Why is the non-I/C belt an inch longer than the belt for intercooled??

Also, I see NAPA lists a belt # 25080830 for the 91 I/C w A/C for $52.19

Then, they list # 25080830HD heavy duty belt for $62.69

I thought the plain old NAPA belt was pretty heavy-duty; what is so good about this HD belt to be worth the extra ten bucks?? Does anyone run them??

Also, they show a belt tensioner pulley and a belt idler pulley.

I don't see an idler on either of my engines.

Where is this idler??

Thanks.

DAYCO Part # 5080640
GATES Part # K080635

Correct length is 64" - 64 1/4"

I would just get a new A/C compressor.

My a/c clutch has been out on my 93 D250 for about a year but since
it's a work truck I gut it out in the heat. Last time I changed the belt
I got a spare Kelly springfield 635K8 for a non a/c truck. (they didn't
have another long belt) The 93 has a diagram for both belt configurations
right in front of the radiator and both should work with no problem.
Let me know if you can redo the clutch on the a/c as the compressor is
pretty steep/ Good luck

My trucks 93 D250 276,000/ 2001 2500 w/65,000

The non-IC trucks used a slightly different water pump.

Don't know on the HD belt, I'm running a basic Dayco myself.

The "idler" is the tensioner pulley. I would never buy one. If the pulley bearings are getting tired, the tensioner pivot point probably has a lot of slop too and before you know it the belt will be walking off. Better just to buy the assembly and be done with it.

Hands down best belt to have for all our trucks is the Goodyear Gatorback belt. Can be obtained from Autozone. Just picked one up for my 91.5, was about $28 iirc. (NonAC belt 4080635)

Which compressor does the wife's 91 have, C171 or SD709??

Remanufactured NAPA C171 = $277, and SD709 = $451.

New is about $700.

It's her truck; maybe I'll get her a dash-mounted fan, instead.

Thanks.
