Bumped timing, lost boost and power and gained noise

Thanks for all the help I've already gotten.

My question is: I bumped my timing 1/8, to the motor and gained alot of noise( more of the detanating sound, diesel rattle), boost pressure went from 25psi to 20psi and I seem to have lost power (the boost pressure). Has anyone experienced this before or does anyone have any suggestions on what to look for. Im thinking I should set the pump back to were it was.

umm. when you bumped your timing you went 1/8 to the motor right. and noise what kinda noise. when i did mine i didnt lose any boost i gained alot in rpm use to from first to second in the shift i would only go about 3100 now it will pull to about 3300 and my egt went down a lil but didnt lose or gain boost.

It is normal to lose a little boost but you are not losing power. The boost goes down because the EGTs go down so the turbo is not turning quite as fast, however you increase the actual internal cylinder tempature a little also so the lower EGTs are a false sense of the engine running cooler. The drivability of the truck will improve with the timing boost.

Timing is very subjective and overall affect has a lot to do with your driving style. I see you're not running a 3200 rpm spring. That combined with stock injectors is going to yield marginal results at best with the 1/8 bump. Where we're really looking for more timing is at or above 2500 rpms. You're already de-fueling at that point with the stock gov. spring, so you're missing out on the best part of the bump, I'm afraid.

Just remember that boost does not equal power.

YEp, mine sounds more like a second gen(not that bad) after the 1/8" timing bump, rattle rattle, shake shake, but the gains were MORE than worth it. dont have the gauges in yet to see boost differences.

Mine used to sound nice and mild as well. After the bump it sounds more like Dads 02.

I lost a bit of boost and a bit of bottom end torque but it was well worth it. EGTs came down out of the clouds and are very managable. I also got a little more rattle on a cold startup but that's no big deal.

It's possible you went too far. Go back a little and see if you like it better.

Thanks guys. I think I might back it of a 1/6th and see how I like it. Maybe when I install the 3200 spring I'll play with it some more.

I turned the smoke screw in another half turn (to 2 full turns) and that seems to have smoothend out the noise a bit. So we'll see how it is tomorrow cold.

You're imagining things. The smoke screw will do absolutely nothing for noise.

Your local Bosch pump shop. Look in the phone book for places with names like "Dallas Fuel Injection" or "Fuel Injection Service of Dallas".
