Budget ? For building up a 518

Obviously there will be lots of opinions with a question like this. What I'm looking to gain is an idea of what it might cost to get the tranny upgraded with Kevlar bands, red alto clutches, an aftermarket valve body, and maybe some other internals as recommended by you. Any other tricks are welcome as well

I already have the tight goerends converter so let's skip that $900 part without installation.

Thanks!

Ouch! The viper 2 kit costs more than I was hoping to spend on the whole bag of nuts- I see they sell loose parts too. Can I get away with clutches, bands, and a VB?

Patc is way over rated ! I buy all my stuff through transtar industries, can custom build a kit for your needs. Not just a one fits all type deal. What are your plans for hp/tq and type of use "ie" daily driver, towing, racing etc.. with that info I can give you part #'s and what not.

I'd like to say I'm aiming for 400 Hp- I'm surely not there yet. I'd settle for 350 and instead put that money into getting the hp to the ground. I also hate that feeling of having to baby a tranny because it's at the top end of its abilities.

I haul, tow, hot rod around.. Ya know, truck stuff

Might as well collect parts and make it a 47rh.

Yeah- but I've already sunk money into a converter on the 518.

Can always sell it. I did that with mine.

Might be able to send it out and have it turned into a 47rh convertor.

There's a 47rh locally 2wd for 500. Can a 2wd be turned into a 4 wd?

Ok I searched a bit and found the answer to this one.

More searching found a few complete 47rh's in my area. A full lock up sure would be nice. So would having a spare/ working 518 laying around just in case.

Someone would prolly trade ya shafts. Dont need a controller for a 47rh. Just need a button for lock.

I think 500 is a lil $ for a core. I gave $200 for my working one and $500 for the one with all the goodies in it. Works good so far.

I'm new to Cummins and kind of was just feeling it what it would cost to improve/build my tranny as well. I was recommended by someone else on this forum to talk to Fred Swanson.just send him a pm and he'll get back to you. But basically when I spoke to him he said that generally it would take maybe $3000 to build up an a518. But like I said pm him and he'll get back to you good luck.

I had a reputable guy build my 518 local to me.
Don't know exactly what he did, but I told him what I use the truck for and I chose his " upgraded" converter then let him at it.

$2200 later, I have a 75,000 mile warranty and a trans with a VERY noticeable boost in the seat of the pants feel, and I didn't lift a finger other then to write the check.
I've put 11,000 miles on it so far and am pleased with it
