Why not try the suncoast trans? It's pretty fairly priced for a whole unit.

I would get the double deep pan and an under bed cooler for any transmission I bought.

You can also look at their 47rh rebuild kits. It should be the same. If you go that route upgrade to the steel planets.

IMO, it really gets down to what you plan on doing with the truck.

"I haul, tow, hot rod around.. Ya know, truck stuff" can be a tall order depending on how you define "hot rod around".

It's my experience that the majority of the 3-speed section's, rotating assembly components are relatively the same from the 727 on up to the 48RE.
- With the increasing power of the evolving Dodge/Cummins, the planetary gear-sets were beefed-up as well as the case. IIRC, the intermediate-shaft spline-count changed with the 47RH along with other more subtle mods done as well.

From there, one can run the billet/alloy shafts ($), increased clutch/steel counts in the clutch-pacs, increased line pressures, etc.

Boosted-launches breaks stuff! If you plan on any drag-racing, you'll learn/know a great many are won in the first 100 feet. You'll need to come out of the hole pretty hard. That's where it gets really expensive in a hurry.

Getting the valve-body set up right is key to a long transmission life with hot rodding.

Doesn't help others when you have no "location" on your avatar.

He asked about a BUDGET, which to me interprets into dollars and cents,no?

Geographical differences are not going to make or brake a budget on a trans rebuild, are they?Nobody said where Fred Swanson lives either. Does that make his suggestions any less credible even though he's a guru?

Sorry I didn't help, I'll try harder next time! Wow

"Local guy" doesn't really help him if he has no idea where or who he is, does it? Doubt I'm going out very far on a limb to say that there's not a lot of "local guys" who can built a bullet-proof automatic.

I was simply telling my experience. I guess I assumed with the "local guy" statement, and not knowing exactly what the "local guy" did to the trans, he could get an idea what he might pay for a "basic" rebuild.

Nowhere did I recall seeing him ask about a bullet-proof budget.

Once again, sorry my post was not helpful. Now instead of polluting the man's thread with criticism, let's keep it on topic!

Thanks

Ok, The list of numbers is from transtar industries.
Master overhaul kit- 22006E
Kickdown band Kevlar flex-22022AK
Reverse band Kevlar-22024B
Valvebody kit-T22165B
Tech manual - 12400E
Hd band strut-22916-2
Billet piston kit with quick ratio apply lever -A22905HDK
Hd band anchor- 22915-3
That should cover most applications other that 4 wheel drive 20 psi launches ! When ordering the master kit just let them know you would like to upgrade to red forward and direct clutches. Also set line pressure to 80 psi not any higher with that thight of a conveter, or you wont hold it with the brakes..

Yes I was vague.

I tow maybe half a dozen times a year. Usually it's a skid loader or a dump trailer with manure for my garden.

I would like to make a few passes at the local track, but in the last three years I've only made one official pass, so I don't think I will ever be there every weekend making 1/2 a dozen passes each night.

I would like to gain back some of the lost hp that never makes it to the ground, and I would like to feel firm crisp shifts.

Like I also said - I would like to get rid of the feeling that I need to be careful on the transmission at all times. I trust my cummins, I want to trust my 518!!

I looked at the suncoast unit - I think it starts around 2200 before core and shipping. I didn't see if that includes a converter- I doubt it but that's ok because I would switch over my tight goerends unit anyway. They claim higher clutch count, bands and valve body, and complete fresh build. There's something tempting about buying a product that's built repeatedly by the same crew vs taking a box of parts to a stranger and wishing good luck.

I'm leaning that way.

I suggest against taking a box of parts to a stranger. Cost me an extra $1500 in repairs (shops fault). I considered going to court but decided to count my losses as i had no desire to talk to that shop again.

PM your email address. I kept an Exxcel spread sheet of my purchases and costs when I did a "stout" 518 build, was told buy a fella or two it should be good for 400hp/700tq. I think it was a wee over $2k when all was said and done (Goerend included)

I agree. Suncoast is a good company as well. Transmissions is what they do.

I would call them and get some more info first though. I'm sure you'll do that.

If I'm not mistaken their tranny does not come with a converter. It is an additional cost.
