Brake cylinder size?

I have a 1989 D350 Dually with a leaking right-rear brake cylinder. Does anybody know what size it is? I would like to have the new part on hand so I don't make multiple trips trying to find one. I replaced the left side already but like a dope I didn't do both so I'm hoping the new one works out to be the same size. Not looking forward to having to pull both sides out.

Thanks

Edwin

a very common and worthwhile upgrade on the rears of our trucks is the 1 1/8" wheel cylinders. i'd have to scrounge for part numbers, but napa will have them. they're a direct install, why they weren't put in there from the factory.....dodge....

1 1/8" cylinders, 3" shoes, and proper adjustment makes her a pretty solid braking axle.

Hmmmmm. Well I have 3 inch shoes for sure. I can get the 1-1/8 cylinders easy enough and they are cheap at $12.00. I wish I knew if the other side has the 7/8 or 1-1/8 now. I think I'll get both and then check the left side and change it if necessary. In SoCal traffic you need all the stopping power you can get.

Thanks for the quick response.

no problem. let us know how you turn out and if you notice a difference. as long as you have that big axle nut socket, it's really not a tough job. again, thanks dodge.

Just had my rear brakes all apart for shoes and cylinders. Napa had the chevy 1 ton cylinders and the 2 & 9/16" rounded corner socket needed to get the bearing retainer nut off.

Cylinders were $13 and socket was $24

From the factory all dual wheel rears came with 1 1/8" cylinders and 3" shoes. It was only an option on single wheel trucks. I will have to look through my dealer brochure to verify on 350 single wheel trucks but I am thinking it was standard on all 350 diesel trucks. That's not to say someone didn't go cheap and install the smaller at some point in its life.

Locking Wedge

Elsewhere on this site, it is asked about the little clip that goes under the spindle nut to lock it in place. I saw that these are available at Napa Auto Parts but the part number wasn't known. I went to my local Napa and of course it isn't in the computer, or at least the parts guy couldn't find it. Luckily there was somebody there that knew what it is and where to find them.

The part number is 635-1103 and they are packaged singly. The pair of them cost me $9.38 not including tax.

I totally scrap the whole setup. It is the worst thing they ever used. I buy the spindle nut kit from Napa that is the old version nut/star washer/nut. I can dig that number up if needed. It list its for a Ford but it fits our D70/D71 rears as well as the D60/D61 fronts.

Please do that. I plan to do the job tomorrow but if I can get the updated parts I'll put them in instead. The current nylock type nut scares me also.

Thanks

Napa #630-1659 spindle nut kit
Please do what you think is best. I have swapped all of my rears to these every time I do brake work without failure. Its a tried and true method. I know some people even go the Chevy setup. Its all a matter of taste really.

Unfortunately that NAPA part looks to be unavailable locally. I crossed it to a Dorman #05306 Which is also not in stock at O'reilly or Autozone. I found them at Amazon where I get free shipping and they should be here by Wednesday.

I think I should wait and do the job properly.

Thanks Freight Train.

This set is even better than the old bend over star tab style. Never break a tab again.

PMD60SN D60 NUT KIT HUB TO SPINDLE

I had these on the rear of my 91, same socket and set as the front axle.

If you intend to do the job correctly, then you must ALSO replace the nylock nut, as per the FSM they're desiged to be used only once, then thrown out. This is why freight train suggested using something different, as a good number of us already have.

Have fun, either way
