boost/intercoolers

I was just wondering what kind of boost people get and what setup you have to get that boost.

I have my pump turned most the way up w/ 16cm exhaust housing and I get maybe 15lbs under high load, i'm wondering if maybe my intercooler is leaking. Maybe it would be worth my while to take my intercooler out and test it.

THere is a really big difference between the intercooled and non-intercooled engines as far as boost goes. The non-intercooled injectors flow as much as the 185 injectors in the intercooled trucks so you are going to see significantly higher boost #s in the non-intercooled trucks. Additionally, you don't see hte loss that comes with cooling the pressurized air.

My truck, with the 16cm housing and 185 injectors with some tweaking used to get me 22psi. Now that I have the PDR HX35/16 and have tunred my fuel way up, I am seeing 35-36psig. 15psi is not that low for a H1C turbo. It certainly does not hurt to pull you intercooler to see if you do have any leaks though. They are aluminum and are prone to corrosion once the paint is damaged.

Those numbers are a bit suspiciously low....

Pull off all your IC boots and look them over real close.
Roll the rubber in your fingers and look for signs of cracking dry rot type of thing.
If they all seem good reinstall them and tighten firmly.
The next step is to get a piece of heavy rubber tubing the same diameter as the turbo air inlet, plug one end with a pvc plug and insert an air fitting w/pressure guage.
Pressurize the system to about 20psi and shut off the air. It will have a bit of normal leakdown because not all the valves are closed.
Once you get 20 psi, go listening first.... all over the place but across the front of the rad area and so forth. Then, use the spray bottle with soapy water if you hear or suspect a leak. That will really help to nail down any leaks.

If you have none, then you need to look a bit further for your potential boost issue.

That is the difference between the IC and non-IC versions. Their injectors flow more than the intercooled trucks plus as our intercoolers cool the compressed air down, the pressure drops more. It is the old PV=nRT thingy.

According to "the book" there is typically a 4 to 5 psi pressure drop accross an intercooler.
Also for the non I/C the boost is hotter, making more pressure as mentioned above.
Plus we have no place to leak...there's only one very short hose.
I got 30 + psi as well with stock injectors...still at 30 + because my gage is bottomed .

whoa whoa whoa....what book says these IC's loose 4-5psi? That is absolutely terrible! Most modern IC's will loose less than 1psi up to around 20psi.

And boost is not the only story here....the non intercooled guys may get some more boost, but one needs to run the math on 2 trucks to see which is actually getting the denser charge. An IC truck could very well give up a few psi and still make more power.

I make 23psi unloaded with a 16cm housing @ 1100*, the fuel pin set on the thin side, and about 1.25 turns in from the collar, star wheel and smoke screw all the way in. There's no way my truck would make that kind of number on the 21cm housing, I never got over 15psi with it, tho the fuel was turned down more then (950*).

where would I get the 3200 rpm gov. spring and is it worth it, on the high way I top out at a little less than 2500 rpms and i'd like to get more at least for short distances.

i just ordered a digital camera and when i get it i will show you a picture of the boost gauge at 33. also how can you call a pump bump not a real mod, isnt it similar to putting a chip on a newer model vehicle.

I think his point is you usually need injectors to start doing that on one of our trucks with the H1C. And what does 'minor' mean? We had a non IC 90 model, and with the pump about 1.5-2 turns past the collar it didn't make more than 25psi with the 18cm housing

well my thread hasnt been updated since we broke the collar off. it is probably 3 turns past the collar, maybe more. all i know is its a quick truck. i want to get the 3k governor spring, and some injectors, but ill probably get an intercooler first. my girlfriend is getting me a 16 cm housing for my b-day so well see how many lbs that gets me.
