Blow by

I pulled the oil filler tube cap today and I was getting significant choo choo stack happening. I replaced the cap and it didn't look like anything was coming out of the stinky slinky. How do I clean that dude out? I can't even see where it's connected to the engine.... Maybe that's why my rear main is leaking so badly!

Yup, what Dave said. Mine pukes like a freshman college kid at their first keg party, but runs like a, umm, good running engine

I think there's plenty of room there--it's up above the starter by a fair bit...above the LP even, IIRC. Just an old school radiator clamp on mine...

There's a couple of "off the Shelf" things to deal with a blow-by issue. Kinda pricy though compared to the K&N filter.

There's this thing that might be standard equipment on the 2nd gen CTDs ~
http://www.fleetguard.com/pdfs/produ...SB_LT32519.pdf

Then there's the Marine CTD fix ~
https://www.dieseltruckresource.com/...d.php?t=162028 (see 600's link for a pic).

I've often toyed with the idea of adding a second stock 1st gen vent just forward of the original. One would have to whittle and braze a bit. Not sure on that idea.

Hope this helps.

Wellllll that's kinda what the 24 valvers have
Chry just did add the oil drain back part of it so if you over fill you over valver.........it go's into a pint Puck tank......and after it gets full...........well thats when 24 valvers start having over heating problem because the fan.....some how, splatters the oil all over the radiator and then dust and grime plug the radiator.

Oddly enough, i have found that my pesky power stering leak. has done the same thing to the drivers side of my radiator

I found this by accident when i had my grill off trying to decide how this intercooler is going to work on my truck.

I thing i had better get some degreeser and some hot water before i go to Moab for turkey day

The part number might be K-N62 1480

1 1/3" clamp on filter

Could also be just 61-1480

$17.95

This is a little over my head. What is this doing (the kn breather)? I thought the clear plastic tube does the breathing.I thought you were going to fix that. why did you end up with a breather filter? Can someone just explain the whole blowby thing, I have heard many opinons, but which is correct?

The vent tube is 3/4" and black, and it tappes into the tappet cover and goes straight down from there. It is apparently a pain to get to, because the starter and other stuff needs to come off to get it out to clean the screen that can become clogged after a long time.
That's why I went the K&N route.

As far as blow-by, the piston rings are there to form a seal between the piston and the cylinder wall. When ignition of the mixture occurs (just before the piston is all the way up on the compression stroke, depending on how much the injector pump is advanced) there is a giant explosion, and the pressure spike is so great that the rings can't hold all of it, and a little leaks by (or "blows by" ) the rings into the crankcase.
This blowby has to be vented, or the pressure will push oil out of the engine seals and or blow seals out entirely (like my rear main).

Does that help?

So has this fixed you rear main seal leak? or are you still going to have to replace it?
