Binding

Morning all. 93 in sig. Seems to have just started about a month ago. Something seems to be binding in the driveline: (tranny/transfer/shaft?). It will feel like resistance then kind of release (if I listen carefully seems to be a noise just below the drivers side cab?). Seems to be releasing when it's in 2nd gear. Once released, there is no more issues. It only seems to be the first mile or so of driving for the day. All fluids normal (no metal or shavings/discoloration. Everything freshly changed).

I had a weird binding banging noise from time to time as well. Was installing motor mounts last night and noticed that due to the broken mount my exhaust pipe was occasionally hitting my front drive shaft.

Is it possible that the transmission is starting out in second gear, and then downshifting to first as you get moving and step on the throttle harder? You might try starting out with the transmission in manual low to see if it changes the sensation at all.

agree this is a good possibility,

check your rotors and calipers, look for leakage, and free caliper moment on the slide surfaces and look for signs of heat on the rotors.
grossly uneven wear of the pads is also a good indicator of a stuck or malfunctioning caliper.

Thanks for the ideas all. Already did the manual low tranny test. It is such a slight/intermittent thing it's hard to replicate. Calipers and all that good. I had an idea of the left locking hub because it's not OEM and seems kinda cheap (even though it's a Warn). Disassembly. showed nothing amiss and fresh grease in the hub showed no contamination, and it seems to operate fine. Further testing today

Update

It's baaaack. The colder temps of late (20s) and I noticed this am--after letting the truck idle in neutral for 5 min--started off and it shifted 1-3 fine. Came to a stop at light and when I started again (and it got up to 2nd speed) there was a binding noise coming from front of cab area (continued into 3rd). Couldn't stop because of traffic and it disappeared once I had gone a few blocks at 30ish MPH. Was in 2Hi with hubs unlocked. Last time it did it I was able to stop and start again and that seemed to have cured it. Next cold start, I'm going to start with transfer in 4Hi to see if that eliminates issue. I had another rig do the same thing once and it turned out to be the hub locking mechanism freezing up. Newer grease in there but haven't done a full repack in awhile. Hope it's not tranny/transfer issue. Anyone else have this? All u-joints, carriers good.
