Rancho shocks utilize an older technology called "twin-tube," whereas Bilsteins contain a newer technology called "monotube" or "gas shocks."
Monotube is clearly the superior technology for racing or other high-cycling activities, because the shocks have less tendency to fade. BUT, an unfortunate downside of monotubes (as far as 4WD First Gen trucks are concerned) is they always add some element of stiffness. With leaf springs on all four corners of our trucks, added stiffness is almost never a desirable trait.
I'm running some high-tech adjustable monotubes from ProComp and I have them on the softest setting; they're still too stiff. If I had it to do over I would purchase the adjustable Ranchos. My advice is to save money by avoiding the expensive Bilsteins -- it is possible monotube shocks would work well on the front of 2WD First Gen, but they are certainly too stiff for my truck.
I had the 5000s on my 68 4X4 Chevy for years with no problems.(I should have kept that one for a Cummins) I have always wondered if the 9000s were worth the extra $$.
