I may have done something that I wasn't supposed to be able to do ; but, when I installed the piston-lift-pump on my engine, I looked that outlet hole over and decided to try a 1/4"NPT x 3/8" hose-barb.

The 1/4"NPT screwed right down in there.

I applied a goodly amount of Permatex High-Temperature Thread-Sealant to the male threads and snugged it in there.

I haven't seen nary a drip since.

I would assume that a 1/4"NPT to 6-AN adapter should be available.

I used AN at the filter end of the lift-pump to filter hose, and at both ends of the filter to injection-pump hose.

Thanks for a good write-up.

I always learn something from them.

Thanks for the kind words folks.

The actual conversion took maybe four hours as I was in uncharted waters if you will. With this as a primer, those who decide to go this route should be able to accomplish the task in less time I believe.

In making the post, I sorted through 213 photos (a total of 650mb in .jpg file size) and came up with about 43 images that would serve my purpose. After processing those (interpreting, cropping, enhancement, text, etc) I was at about four hours. Composing and assembling the thread took maybe another four to six hours. I don't know, I wasn't counting.

All in all, it was fun for sure.

I thought you said 'Big' Fuel Line?. Guess ya haven't seen my 3/4"ID fuel line. Very nice work. The early fuel tanks (at least my 89 and 90 tanks) don't have the removable bung deal in the float assembly. I would've done mine this way, but couldn't, so I drilled the tank for the bulkhead fittings. Oh and they certainly don't have that primary screen (in red on the bottom of the float assembly). That would be NICE. Just a small hole for fuel to flow into the assembly, then like a gasser tank of old a metal sock over the pickup hose.

BC, whose ladder bars are those or are they custom? Are they bolt on or welded?

I've have a few pics I would like to add in here. I just did this mod on my ride using 1/2 Parker hose and push lock fittings.

Here are the parts I used to enter the tank, there is another nut and washer inside the plastic bung.

I drilled the plastic pickup tube out to 5/16. I wanted to go bigger but there just isn't enough material.

OK, a couple pics of the 1/2 line on the engine. I know this has been covered already but I'll post a em' anyway to show the people who want to do this mod.

Parts needed:
To come out of the piston LP you need a M14 to a 4,6,8, or 10AN fitting. Use whatever AN size that matches the hose size you plan to run. I know there has been questions asked about the size coming out of the LP, 14mm is the correct size for a 2nd Gen lift pump

OK, you will also need three M12/AN fittings, one each for the fuel filter IN, fuel filter OUT and injection pump IN.

Here's the stock fuel line:

Line and fitting removed:

M12/ 8AN fitting installed:

And then I went with an 8AN Pushlock 90*:

I have that clamp purdy darn tight, not tight enough to crush the plastic but tight enough to ensure the hose contours to the square plastic nipple. I haven't had any problems with it sucking air at all.

Time to upgrade the plastic ends on the throttle actuation rod to metal ends and new rod.

Did you drill out the POS plastic pickup in the sender that CK is talking about? If not then you probly already know you have a 1/2" system necked down to what, 1/4" ID??

JMO, I prefer the bulkhead either on top the tank or on bottom of the tank, and not inside the sender.

Once again, a M12/ 8AN fitting:

And then a straight 8AN Pushlock fitting:

Here are the fittings I used on the LP. I can't remember what size fitting I used to come into the lift pump. It looks like a pipe fitting since I teflon taped it. Sorry, I have racked my brain but I can't remember. The other fitting is the M14 to an 8AN 90*

Here is the finished product (almost, the fuel pressure gauge was temp. I now have a fuel pressure gauge inside the cab) Please excuse my dirty engine bay.

I used a pressure regulator from Vulcan and ran a 3/8 return and plumbed it into the stock 5/16 supply line for a return to the tank. You can run a return line all the way back to the tank if you want, I was just lazy and wanted to use the stock supply line as mine.

Yeah, HAHAHA I hate those plastic rod ends. Just haven't gotten around to swappin' them out yet.

As for the plastic pickup, I drilled it out to 5/16. I couldn't go any bigger. I am still devising a plan to make a 1/2" pickup, trust me, its in the works. But like BC847 said, I like the way the stock assembly works and want to keep it. I think its better to have 3" of 5/16 in the tank than it is having 8' of 5/16 to the motor. So, I'm gunna stick with it for now until I can built a 1/2" pickup tube.

BC, I'm just wondering as to how well the rubber fuel line has held up in your truck ?
