Bending Some 3inch...

Well I went and got myself some 3" straight exhaust pipe today. A nice brand new 10 foot piece to be precise. What do I plan to do with that you ask? I'm going to run it out infront of my back wheel... BUT I do have a few questions.

Those of you who have done this...
1. Do you run a muffler or resignator or do you just let her breath freely?

2. How do you go about bending your pipe? I've got a 3"inch pipe bender and everything but I was wundering if it'll just collapse... and would filling it with sand stop it? BTW I'm only looking for a 45 degree angle at the least.

Mike

A pipe bender will just colapse it. Exhaust shops can bend it, the one by my house has patterns and they just take the pattern then bend a piece of straight pipe to match it and there you go. Its pretty cheap really. I got a tail pipe bent for an explorer for maybe $50 all bent. It was only 2 or 2.5" and not as long but still I would bet you could get it for less than $100.

Why not reuse the end of the stock tailpipe?

It's my understanding that some states/counties may have laws against exhaust dumping in front of the rear wheel.

Best check that first.

Then consider all the soot build-up on the tire/rim.

Oh she's legal around here... As Long as it all comes out behind the cab it's good. And as for soot... I see no problem

I've got to consider many things... and reusing of the tail piece was in mind BUT with the whole exhaust being fairly new I wouldn't want to ruin it incase I want to sell it later on.

Eventually I'm going to a bigger turbo and will need to go to at least 4 inch so I dont want to do anything too fancy. No sense in doing something that I dont plan on keeping for long.

the good and bad

Hey,
Goin out in front of the tire is the way to go......if ya don't have decent wheels. If you blow any smoke at all, it'll take about 3 days to turn it black. It's also a nice sound, but i'm contemplatin goin out the back to get a little more rumble. No matter how you do it, it's hard to go wrong.

You'll want to take it off after awhile. I had mine out the passenger side like that for awhile, 5" and that tire turned wierd with a yellowish tint from the heat I guess and the wheel was completely covered in soot. I tried to keep it clean but when I took it off for the first time since I did it, the back was so gummed up it took a good hour to clean it. YUK! Looks good, and sounds good, but you'd prolly be happier with it behind the rear tire.

I think I'll stick to and at least TRY the 'out in the front of the rear wheel' approach just for awhile.

However I did get to thinkin... How about, instead of bending it, I cut them on angles and weld them together to get the angle I want. I can't see this making much of a big deal but I could stand corrected.
