my tranny is junk now and i found one place on evil bay that can build one in a couple of days and send it to me for just over a grand, it has a 12 month unlimited mile warranty. any thoughts comments or ideas? my truck is at a shop that wants 2600 to put in a rebuilt one and im thinking about just doing it myself. whacha all think?
Ther was some discussion on this the other day in one of the treads. I am on I phone so I can't look it up now. But check about a week ago. I looks at the same rag looks great if it lasts

sweet, the indiana guys are the the ones i talked too. the can have one ready for me by the end of the week. i found a place that will put one in for 500 bucks, does that sound like a good deal? how hard are they to put in? im broken down in south Cincinatti on my way home to san diego from New hampshire. i have a few tools but im not sure what i would need to put one in.

I am reminded of the scorn shown me by my room mates friends for being such a sucker for buying my own tools( that they were trying to borrow at the time), 'just buy them from Sears and return them when the job is done' they said...so I invited them to do just that. I *HATE* not having good tools, and even more discovering that once a job is underway. I wish you easy success in any case, try also the 911 section of the forum and perhaps contact a local chapter for assistance...there is Gold in that list.

i've never done a dodge manual trans before, but they are simple enough to bolt in and out as they are(manual trans in general). A lot less electronics and what have you than an auto. The transfer case will be HEAVY and has a bunch of things coming off of it. I'm going over the tools you may need in my head, someone add if necessary. I'm sure brandon(crossy's son) will chime in.
1/2" drive ratchet set and a few extensions with an universal(Weibull wobble) - this should take care of all trans to xfer case and trans to adapter plate bolts. Along with cross-member nuts/bolts.
1/4" drive ratchet set - this will make removing the drive shafts and inspection plate easier.
a few combination wrenches(check which ones you need for the cross-member nuts/bolts should be enough)
With a floor jack you can get it done in a day(in a parking lot or in a driveway). Just be sure your able to put things back the way you took them off, a very important part of being a part changer.
the only other thing i can think of is a ratchet strap to strap the xfer case and trans to the jack(which ever u do get) i used a regular floor jack to do mine in my driveway.

The hardest part, for me, is getting the input shaft up into the engine. It has to go thru the clutch and sit inside the flywheel. Took me two people to get that nicey-nice. And having an extra person to help get the shifter back in and the retaining ring set is nice, too...
The motorcycle jack makes this real easy, because you can adjust the attitude of the tranny before you lift it. The jack lifts straight up, without changing the attitude. I use it on my Porsche 912, with the engine and tranny already mated and it is a one man job. It does not sound like he is going to need to remove the clutch, which eliminates the need for an alignment tool...Mark
Right, the first time I did it I used an actual tranny jack and the second time I used an atv jack...still was tough...not saying it's impossible, just warning that it's a tough 1 person job.
