How do I set the baseline timing when installing a new pump?

Line the hash marks up on the side of the pump and cover then get it to a shop to time it ASAP.

Usually the pump is static timed when rebuilt. Install the pump, tighten it down and then remove "lock screw" in the pump. This should be close enough to get it running. More performance can be gained by increasing the timing. If it was rebuilt stock its probably fairly low.

Thanks for the reply. Where is the "lock screw"?

Do you have a manual? Screwing in the lock screw in usually the one of the first steps in removing the pump.

It screws in to the side of the pump below the throttle shaft just back from the mounting flange. Your pump should have a u-shaped washer wire tied to it somewhere. The srcew/bolt needs to be backed off a couple of turns and then the washer slipped under the head of the bolt.(this is after the pump is installed)

If you can not find the washer see if its already installed under the bolt. If it is then you are on your own for timing and I would question the professionalism of the shop that sold you the pump.

The rebuild did have the key wired to it, and I put it in before I totally understood the proceedure. Since my locating pin on the engine doesn't work I guess it's a wash anyway.
I'm going to use a dial indicator on the top of the piston through the injector hole to find TDC, then I will remove the washer from the pump and lock it in. I guess this will get me close. Then I can advance it 5 deg.
Thanks,
Mark
