Auto->NV4500 complete
Thanks to this site and all the helpfull advice, my 518 auto is now relocated to the back of the bed to aid in winter traction. In its place is a new NV4500HD
The truck has never felt so powerful, with one minor problem. Every now and then while accellerating, my turbo will start to bark. This happens at about 15psi and above when the boost is constant it will start to flutter. Even the gauge will jump up and down about 2 psi. Is this harmful? Could it be a problem with the AFC diaphram or the fuel pin? Any help would be welcome.

Very cool on installing the 5 speed. Ya coulda put up a couple more pics of the process, though . . .
When the turbo surges (or "flutters") the shaft is speeding up and slowing down as fast as your boost needle is shaking -- so I wouldn't do it for any extended period of time. Turbo manufacturers will also tell you not to operate their product so that it surges. Of course, Bosch tells you not to twiddle with the pump, either.
An Hx35 will most likely solve the problem, if you want to solve it. So will your right foot, or tweaks to de-tune the pump.

more pics will be up soon, thanks for the info on the turbo. After posting I read some old threads in which I believe it was you who described the problem in detail. After the cost of the 5spd I doubt if a new turbo will make it through the finance dept.
I was out cruisin this afternoon, and found that if I keep it over 1700 rpm the noise is gone. I have to learn to drive the truck all over again. Cant wait for camping season.

Congrats on joining the world of real trucks! Mine's been fluttering for 6 months and hasn't blown up yet, you've got time to save for a new turbo. My best hints are to advance your timing if you haven't done that yet, back the smoke screw all the way out, and set the star wheel as high as you can stand it. Also keep the motor wound up when you're working it hard. I can keep mine out of flutter range pretty easy now.
Thanks, I was concerned because I havent heard the tubo flutter on accelleration before. Man what a difference... so much more torque, mash on the throttle in 4th and it puts you back in the seat. I cant wait to hook up something heavy and show it the G,s. One happy camper here.
So just how much was involved in this undertaking? I'm really seriously considering swapping my slushbox for a real transmission... I'll bet next you're gonna get an exhaust brake
Have fun!

pretty easy to do but round up all your parts before hand. The transfer case has a different input shaft so I used one from a doner truck that had a getrag. the pedals were also from a doner truck, and they wentin very easy. The brackets are already under the dash, and even the hole for the master cyl. is there. You will have to move all of the wiring that you ran through that convienent hole like I did.
You will need to change your drive shafts as the NV is 6 inches shorter than the auto. These can also be used from a getrag doner. Clutch and flywheel from the same truck will work. Order your bellhousing kit from advance adaptors, and your stock cross member will also work with the supplied tranny mount. Make sure you specify which transfer case shifter you have so you get the right bracket. I may have missed some details because I just got home after a 15 hour night shift. PM me if there are any more questions.
