Auto to manual Tranny
Auto to manual Tranny
One of my buddies has a '92 250 pickup with an automatic transmission (which is getting ready to die). He wants to put in a NV5600 6spd into his truck once he is comissioned into the AF.
Now....the questions...He basically wants to know how/can it be done and the general idea of cost. Thanks!

I did the conversion on my 91 to an nv4500. I also looked into the 6 speed but that extra gear just wasnt worth the hassel. Too much hacking and butchering. I understand the frame has to be notched to make room for the starter or something. There are some trucks out there that have the 6 speed stuffed into them but unless you have a really well equipped shop and a lot of fab know how this project is on the high end of the "really hard meter".
You will need a t case from a manual and some other parts from the same. I decided to go with the getrag parts for a few reasons. First there is a convertion available from the getrag to nv4500 and this allows you to use clutch components that will fit your truck. It also uses the 13" clutch from the getrag. Pedals com out of a doner and bolt right in with no mods needed. Clutch linkage or master/slave setup will also fit. I suggest finding a doner truck to get most of the parts you will need. Advance adaptors has a bell housing kit that bolts the tranny up and the cross member from your auto will work if you open up the holes a bit towards the back. Drive shafts from the doner will also work. You will need all the parts inside the bell housing and the transfer case from the getrag will work also. Your auto t case has the wrong input shaft and you cant change it to the one you need. Found this out the hard way. As for the coupler from the 5 speed to the t case I just removed the rear seal in the trans and let oil into the adapter housing. Hope all this helps you out.
Freddy is right look for a donor truck the nv5600 in it use all the puts from it.The only mods you have to do is move your crossmember back 2 holes and drill 4 new ones and shortin the rear driveshaft 1 inch. You need the transfercase from a 89-93 from behind the getrag , and make a bracket for the shifter. It's as easy as bolting everything back up.Everything in mine came out of a 2002 ,and it only took a weekend from start to finish. The parts you don't need you can sell with no problem. Some of the posts that i read try to make it sound like it is so hard that it isn't worth it. To much hacking and butchering that's just not true the newer starters are smaller than ours so no notching the frame has to be done no really big nods have to be done no special tools to buy. To me it alot easier and cheeper than any kit you can get because with the kits you still don't get everything you need. well to me i thought it was one of the easiest things we ever did.hope this helps and good luck
