another voltage thread!
another voltage thread!
Well I got my truck up and running and noticed the smell of sulfer after a drive . I checked my voltage and its between 16 and 20 volts. I did the standard ground cables from the alternator to the voltage regulator. As well I replaced the voltage regulator, it was an after market unit however. I still have not solved the problem. What should I be measuring on the two wires at the VR? power, ground, ignition? Also what should be on the alternator as far as testing? ac voltage, ground, switched power? I need to get this dealt with ASAP. thanks.

16 - 20 volts is sort of wide and very high range. I assume it has a small black box regulator! This is going way back for me. Believe would have alterna1tor checked with bench tester. On vehicle testing has been problematic. With that much charging voltage you dash gauge should be showing very high charge rate???? Next have the batteries tested indivudally.
My first though is alt internally finding a ground causing overcharge since you have had two regulators on vehicle.

Ya Ill try another VR tomorrow. I ordered one from Dodge as there are no good wreckers near me. I just saw a post by Jim Lane that seems helpfull, he has all of the connections listed and what they should test. Ill test all of them tonite and if that doesnt solve it a 3rd VR might
I dont feel it will be an alternator problem as every other post I read it always turn out to be the VR or the wiring. Thanks.
