Another theoritical VE vs. P7100 question
it's been said... I had this argument in the 94-98 section over on CF. Those guys just don't get it. They want the 600hp. You don't need it. If you want something that is maybe 400hp or less a VE will win over a ppump of the same power output in my mind. WAY more pros for the VE at those power levels than a ppump.
dynamic timing, typically higher tq especially down low, often better fuel mileage. reliability is probably about the same. VE starts easier and better in the cold. VE set up properly will make lots of hp even way past 3k rpm. You'd probably need a cam to do it though.
The VE is a good pump. It's partly why I'm going to put the VE motor in my ford. The ford is my DD. I'd rather DD with the VE over the ppump any day, especially in the winter where it starts easier.

i second that rick 12v, we have alot of subzero here so cold start is nice. i should clarify i havent p-pumped the same motor 3 times. i build one and put in my truck and someone comes along and wants to buy it so i sell and build another. one i put a cam in and a 913 pump and a bunch of stuff and it was fast on top end but kind of all or nothing powerband. decide how you use the truck and what you really want and build it. after building several i prefer the ve for daily driver.
Well if I stay VE, the goal is 350-400. If I do convert to a 47RH, I will have it built, and will try to shoot for 500-550 whp, so I would convert to a P-pump. I believe the turbos I have now are good for about 650 whp.
I am still trying to figure out how much power can be made through a P-pump and still have a good tow vehicle. I think it's the 500-550 whp range.
I should clarify that I don't use my truck for any competition. I don't pull, I don't dragrace, etc. I just want it to be a good tow vehicle. It would also be nice to be able to whoop up on a diesel ricer here and there when needed.

I think people give up on the VE pump when they can't hit 400 hp right off the bat with a simple pump turnup and maybe a hair bigger turbo like you can with a p pumper. In my opinion there is a lot of potential in the lil ol VE pump, everyone just gives up on them too early to find it. I don't have that much into my 1st gen but I've done my homework and its running a lot better than I expected. With a built 47rh trans, twins, some timing and the right injectors should get you to a reliable 450hp on fuel easy enough with a 12mm VE. That's all you really need for a good tow vehicle if ya ask me. And it should have that bottom end quick power to be pretty fast to stomp a few other diesels or ricers in a race since 1st gens are so light. Look at BC847, hes runnin 12 second 1/4 miles with a 12mm VE, Built A518, and twins and he's at a reliable 450ish hp.

What I do know though is I towed my dodge with my ford (ppumped at the time). The ford has the mods in my sig. I'm certain I'm over 400hp and it towed beautifully (tow load was about 9klbs, total gvw was about 16k). And that was with an always open wastegate. My mileage sucked but again the wastegate was open (when I bought the truck I didn't notice it had no wastegate actuator and the retaining nut that holds the gate shut had fallen off) all the time. Now that I've shut the wastegate it runs cooler and spools 700rpm sooner, yes 700rpm!. So you can imagine how much better it must tow now right? and even with the gate open and the turbo not spooling really at all I never ran too hot. Even up the grades the most I saw was like 1250F. It runs 100-200F cooler now that the gate is shut. I cruised at 75+mph all day for 3 days, more or less.
I can only imagine a VE doing it better, but quite possibly running hotter. I'm not sure why but it seems the VE runs warmer, maybe it's because of how much fuel it can throw in there at low rpm.

All that said some guys have complained about slow spooling and hot egts if they don't have the fuel for it... so idk but that's just my experience. I personally think it's more of a poorly tuned afc in their cases.
Anybody have any idea what added horsepower you would get just by p-pumping alone with the p-pump and matching injectors. Then with a better turbo and what turbo you are referencing. Still have alot to learn thanks for the great info.
