another charging issue thread

Sorry to suck youre bandwith another one of these...here we go.

Im a great parts swapper, not so great mechanic. So I did what I do best...swapped out some parts.

New crank pos. sensor, new relay, new alt.,tested all the fuseable links(the ones on the driver fender)

It seems as though the alt is putting out,my volt gauge is staying high enough now that the check engine light doesnt come on.I ran a 100 amp load on at as long as I dare with my toaster thing it brought the voltage down, fired it up and drove down the high way 25 miles back home, the batt read 12.07 volts.

Pulled the pcm plug and tested it per the sticky instructions, all test out good.So I assume my pcm is toast but yet has enough of whatever to regulate some voltage enough to keep the batt. voltage from tripping the check engine light? new alt. aint so good?

cruise dont work a/c dont work.

So im concidering doing the external volt reg. mod (per the sticky instructions)
Tomarrow Ive got a guy coming to help me do a a/c compressor swap, drier, etc, etc hes got all the equipment.Im thinkin we may not get the a.c working either cause of the pcm possibly being toast. This brings up another question

So I can fix the alt issue with the sticky mod(assuming my new alt is a good alt.)
How do I make the a/c work not using the pcm? can I simply hook up a 12v switch and use that to send power to the a/c clutch and then have cold?

Thanks guys, appreciate youre time to help. And a huge thanks for that awsome sticky!!!

mIke and his new cummins.

?

One more, lol when I do the volt mod. I just leave all alone and just double up the nuts on the back of the alt where that plastic harness looking thing bolts to the back of the alt?

I did the volt reg. mod. and all is good now.I wonder what the odds are of the pcm's regulator being bad,yet still have the a/c functions working?

I guess Ill know in the morning, after we replace the a/c system.

Did you check out the wiring harness for the crank sensor? It sounds like the PCM is not getting a signal from the crank sensor.

I did check it out, nothing real odvious.I guess I should run a continuity test on the wires.

Got the a/c system redone,I got no power to the low pressure switch when you push the a/c button, but power to it just runnin the vent...? no power to the clutch ingagment,so we just ran a jumper ground and 12 v wire to it and the a/c works! was blowin 47* I assume the pcm is toast cause of the lack of juice to these a/c switchs.

what ya guys think? ant more suggestions?

Thanks guys.

The PCM controls the A/C clutch. If the PCM thinks the engine isn't running (due to no crank sensor signal) then it will not turn on the A/C clutch relay.

cps test

I did a test on the cps the black/blue wire reads~0.00 on the ohm meter

tan/yellow wire with my old school volt reg installed is ~8 volts

grey/black wire is reading .12 volt not on the air gap when its on the air gap I get a reading of 5 volts.

So Im thinking the cps is operating correct?

This test would narrow it down to the pcm being bad?

Thanks for youre help,Mike.

When I originally swapped the cps I set it at .050 no worky, did other stuff.Read here that the guys are setting it tighter at .040 so I did that still no worky.Did the a/c thing found the clutch isnt getting power.

So this morning I run a continuity test on the all the cps wires...there good edit! what the heck is wrong.About to order up the pcm.BUt reading Wanna's post I figured hes right!! its got to be somthing in this **** cps.I reset the gap at .035 now....and it works!! I got a/c,I undid the exteranl volt reg mod hooked the stock stuff back up and what ya know my alt is working great also.

Thanks guys for helping my thick skulled self out, reallt appreciate it!

Thanks Wanna!!

I called a budy of mine at a wrecking yard and asked him what he knows about these issues.he said they garranty there pcm's to work and every one they sell for these trucks always comes back, cause it didnt fix it.Seems dodge needs to redo there specs on the cps for @.035.Just another learning experiance...I think im in for a bunch of that with my new cummins truck adventure.

Thanks again!

That's the fan support. Cummins has 'em. Also check with ebay seller redlinear, he parts out Cummins trucks a lot.

Cam is down low on the left side of the engine, no reason for it to be hurt.
