Well, if it does happen again, take the filter off, and try pumping the primer immediately with the filter off . . . You should get ugatz.

I would pressurize the tank and check for leaks in the lines first. If that turns up nothing, I would remove the adapter elbow on the inlet of the lift pump, and make sure that there is nothing in any of those fittings or the inlet that could possibly be capturing wax or gel particles. The stock diaphragm lift pump has no screen at the inlet; the piston lift pumps do have a screen that can get clogged with gelled fuel/ice. What did your replacement pump have?

If you still haven't found any problem, it's time to check that there isn't a crack in that plastic pick-up line in the tank and that the pick-up screen isn't clogged . . .

FWIW, you probably don't need to replace the fuel filter when this happens.

While I stand by my procedure outlined above, it sure sounds to me as though the strainer in your tank is clogged, and at cold temperatures and higher fuel demand, the "reservoir" of the pick up assembly is running dry.

You need a low fuel pressure alarm, so you can shut her down before she gets air in the injectors next time . . .

Pain in the posterior for you, sorry to hear it.
