air filter systems
Re:air filter systems
The BHAF is a huge air filter that's about the size of the whole stock air filter housing. You can find part #'s by poking around in the FAQ section. DTR member Old Smoky makes a nice diamond-plate aluminum bracket/drip shield to secure the BHAF and keep it dry. When using the BHAF on a 1st gen, you'll notice that the factory intake hose wants to pop off the BHAF all the time. My solution to this problem was to replace the stock duct with a piece of 4" tubing and two 45 degree rubber elbows. I don't know of anything else except the K&N and the BHAF. One of those nice chrome ones off the side of a Peterbilt would stick out a little too far...

Here's a pic of a BHAF on a 2002.
It's the Fleetguard AH19037 with an Outerwears prefilter (water resistant)
Heatshield/mount template can also be found in the "Tech Facts" section, link on the main logo above.
High Performance and Aftermarket Accessories section.
If your inclined to make your own.

Funny, I have 2 batteries in mine. The guy before me installed a tray right next to the existing one. Great for winter starts as I have 2 1175 CCA batteries I bought from Frieghtliner.

Give Outerwears a call at (800) 967-3450
The part number for mine is WR3325-105BL
It fits the Fleetguard AH19037, is water resistant (WR) and Blue (BL).
They have all matter of colors, I'm sure they will tell you, or you can check the website for choices.
www.outerwearsracing.com
If you got a different filter, you can see if they stock ones for that,
or they will make you one, have dimensions handy.
They have part numbers to fit just about all off the shelf filters, only have to custom make them if the filter itself is custom made.

Re:air filter systems
Hey Phox,
Is the heat shield absolutely necessary? Is it there to keep the filter from deteriorating due to heat? It surely can't protect it from taking in hot air. Afterall, the filter is under the hood. Please advise. Thanks! ;D

I've heard of many people just running the BHAF naked,
no shield, no prefilter, just sitting on the fender next to the turbo.
Have heard of a couple where either the neck of the filter or the hose got hot, melted and collapsed, letting a nice unfiltered air stream into the turbo.
I think it is mainly to prevent (or postpone) the latter,
and provide a nice mounting point so it isn't bouncing around on the fender.
Might, to some little degree, keep the super hot air on the engine side, and let the filter pull cooler air through the stock fender hole, but not nearly as well as say, the Scotty II system.

Re:air filter systems
I believe, though I may be mistaken, that AFE makes an intake kit for our trucks. I'll have to call around and check on it though to be sure....If anyone knows for sure let me know
