Again on the starwheel, before I close everything up

I posted earlier on advice from the depth of the starwheel, and to those of you that replied, thank you. I am closing everything back up, and here is my plan, based on your input.

1. PDR hybrid HX35 w/ 16 cm housing- 4" exhaust turbo back already in place
2. POD's for injectors
3. Smokey pin combined with stock spring(offer input on this why the spring that came with the pin should be used- I don't know which spring will give better results)
4. This where I am looking for advice- starwheel. All the way up, or down 6 full turns to the bottom. I say 6 because I counted how many turns it takes from top to bottoming out. Please look at items 1-3 and advise me on #4, and give me reasons why, just for my personal knowledge.

Hey man, just returned your call!

Run the starwheel up. This is what controls your zero/low boost fueling. With POD injectors, you've got more than enough fuel down low, so if you run with the starwheel in then you're making more smoke than necessary. Even with my DDP4's I ran mine way up and it still smoked like crazy before the turbo(s) lit.

Edit: if you end up calling me back tonight, I may not answer. Gotta go to the hospital for some messed up ribs!

hope your OK. When you say all the way up, you mean all the way till the last thread? What are your thoughts on the OEM spring versus the spring that came with the kit?

Ended up just being some torn cartilage where my ribs meet my spine, or something along those lines. Sure hurt, though!

If I remember correctly, I just put mine so it was flush with the last thread. I may be able to take it out even farther? I just used the spring that came with my old smoky pin, I assumed it was there for a reason.

Edit once again: After reading other threads, I don't even know if I'm right. I just know that my fuel screw is bottomed!!!

hmm Big ragu how's it going? I'm moving to SF this weekend.... But we should get together norcal style soon. I just installed a new IP and tomorrow I'm off for tires... As far as the starwheel goes I find it to be an adjustment that isn't very sensitive from top to bottom and even removed, the full fuel screw overrides it in most cases esp with pods or other large injectors.

Pape, where in the bay are you moving to? I still owe you a few beers for helping with my 3200 spring install.

I'm rebuilding my compound setup and doing a disc conversion in the rear, but I'm down for a little meet sometime. Hopefully this will work out better than last time...

moving to Palo Alto and working at SFO, I need to delete my muffler and make my downpipe a litter shorter right off the turbo so I can fit my 12 wg on there... I'll be in Walnut creek tomorrow working on my friend's benz...

yeah, we need to get together, Pape. Glad to see that you'll be close by, somewhat. Sure was fun at Rebal's. What was that, a couple of years ago now, huh? Wonder how Loco 1 is doing......

Well, as far as the starwheel goes, I am 2 threads from bottoming out at the top, and I stuck w/the OEM spring. Something about the smokey spring I don't care for the responsiveness of the truck with it in there. Thanks guys. Pape, you'll have to PM me your contact number so we can hook up.

Good choice I spoke with Old Smokey's designer here is his thoughts on the spring:

"Sorry for the delayed response. I have been on a snowmobile trip. Yes, I designed and built the "Power Pin," or Old Smoky Fuel Pin." You do not need a new spring. The stock one works best. There is an aftermarket spring, but I think that it is a bit soft. Thanks for the support.

Mike

p.s.

Im thinking about starting another production run of the power pin. If you know of anyone interesed please let me know. They will be available at a reduced cost."

Hope this helps,
Joseph

P.S. Greg how are you coming along with the disc conversion?

When running a high star wheel setting, grease the fuel pin and check for full travel by holding the linkage at WOT and pushing the pin down until it bottoms out. It's possible to run the star wheel too high, what happens is you get coil bind on the AFC spring and it stops the fuel pin from going all the way down - which reduces your fueling.
