AFE reusable (oiled) works for me. OEM box but drilled/sawed a bunch of holes in it.

The cross over pipe on the Non-IC motors is a huge constrictor. Upgrade it with a new 3" pipe will make a big difference. And getting better air flow through the stock air filter should be good too.

I will never run those K&N style oiled filters ever again. After I had a piece of straw go right through the one on my 68 Chrysler wagon, down through the vents on the carb, through the carb and stuck into one of the squirters. If it can let through something that big...what else is it letting in....dirt, dust etc.

Look at commercial trucks...do any of them run a "re-usable" oiled cloth air filter...Nope!!

I'll get off my soap box now....

I've heard K&Ns were inferior. May be a chevy/ford type argument though. The aFe seems well made and I can't imagine a sliver of anything passing through. Old tractors & trucks have oil bath air filters to catch all the fine particles. Its quicker and easier to R&R a paper filter than take out a reusable, clean it, dry it, re-oil it and then reinstall.

this is an intercooled system, but still you can get the idea, there are about 10 different part numbers for the filter depending on the brand, i change mine 1 time a year at about 50 bucks each.

the pipe is a piece of 4 inch exaust and i got the boots from here.

FYI, if you're goal is the upper end of the VE power scale, the typical BHAF is a notable restriction.

David,
Can you enlighten us with your knowledge of this filter restriction?
What is a good free flowing filter and can you get a prefilter for it?

Jim

I installed one of those filter service indicators like on tractor filters in the intake. It shows when there's starting to be restriction of flow.
