Advantages of 1st over 2nd

What are they?

I've been looking for a nice 2nd gen, with 5 speed and 4x4 but low mileage nice ones are like gold.

I've seen some nice first gens for decent money. I did a search but came up with nothing.

I've read up on the 2nd gens and know them pretty well but not the 1st gens.

Anyone here give me a quick education.

thanks

Great site

One thing that i know of is the NV4500 5spd w/ 4wd in the 2nd gens is going to handle "Above stock" power better than a Getrag 5spd w/4wd in the 1st gens or so ive been told. Also the ride of the 2nd gens is better, 2nd gens have a coil spring suspension vs the Leafs that our 1st gens have. If you're looking to create a pulling truck or a power monster the 2nd gen injection pumps will offer more than a 1st gens Bosch VE pump. However the 1st gen injector pump can be modified by hand with some simple hand tools and some common sens knowledge of how the system works. There is more space under the hood of a 1st gen as well. The big difference is I dont think ive ever seen a 1st gen with a cracked dash, I've never seen a 2nd Gen without a cracked dash LOL. Classic example to illustrate when they stopped giving a crap about what the made vehicles and vehicle parts out of

You can also enjoy the nostalgic look and the fact that you own one of the last trucks that was really built worth a crap.

It really depends on what you want to do with the truck. Do you want it to be a daily driver, tow rig, or pulling truck? 1st Gens will have absolutley no problem being a daily driver, or a tow rig. It will be a lot easier to find an automatic 1st Gen, but from all my experiences both the 727 and A518 are pretty stout, even when towing.

If you want to build a bad edit pulling truck, like anyone would tell you, go with a P-pumped 2nd gen. Also, 2nd gens have a lot more aftermarket items available for them, while with a 1st gen it can be a pain in the butt to find some part you might need. And, like the other guy said, the NV4500 is a little more stout than the Getrag, but not enough to justify buying a 2nd gen.

Personally I would rather own a 1st Gen. My father and brother both have '97 12 Valves, and after drivng both, I would still rather drive my '91. It feels like you own something special, because honestly, not too many people have real nice 1st Gens, but you see 2nd Gens everyday.

Sorry for the book, but I firmly believe that a 1st Gen would do anything you needed it to. Even if it does feel like you're driving a tank when your doing it. Of course thats another reason why we love 'em.

Did all 93 and under 4X4's have the manual locking hubs?

That is also an advantage to the 1st gen trucks.

If anyone knows of a 5 speed 4x4 W250 or W350 please let me know.

Great site

1st gen advantages...

Easier to work on. Generally better fuel economy. Doors take longer to rust out.

To my knowledge, all 1st Gen.s from 1989-93, if 4x4, came with the bullet-proof NP205 transfer-case, which is the one all others wish they were, along with a genuine Dana-60 straight front axle, WITH MANUAL genuine locking hubs, and real leaf-springs all four corners.

2nd gens dont have that cool old look that turn heads like 1st gens do. theres so many 2nd gen half ton gas trucks running around, i swear they grow on trees. you just dont see that many 1st gens anymore. And you can have fun with them for alot cheaper.

plus if you get a 1st gen as beat up as mine, people get out of your way. Next best thing to a police escort.

1st gens are also lighter, which means they'll be faster, get better fuel economy, etc....

When you're 1st - 2nd is the first looser.. Old Smoky once posted that VE stands for Very Efficent. I bought my truck new in Jan of '93 with the Getrag and along the way switched to the NV4500HD. My best run to date was 394/889 on #2 only with a custom built pump that was tweaked after the warranty ran out. BTW I can still see 23+ mpg highway and 17.5 to 18.5 in town depending on the season.

Rust:

Having come from the NE I know what that means but having lived in the NW my truck has no rust at all. You will probably pay more for a west coast truck but you should will not have to pay or work on it to restore it.
