AC compressor question

Folks,
is it normal for the engine to drop 50 rpm or so when I turn on the AC? seem a bit much to me. My other vehicles wont skip a beat when i turn the AC on, but i realize they are newer computer controlled vehicles. I normally idle around 700 RPM in gear and when I kick on the AC it will drop to around 650. Seems a little much to me, as the truck almost seems to want to surge. Is this normal?

I can hear a very slight difference in tone when I switch the A/C on in mine. It's normal. Although, idle speed set at 700RPM is a little low. It should be set at 750RPM with the A/C on. Mine idles at 800RPM.

Most gassers have a solenoid that ups the throttle a bit when the air is on. These deisel trucks don't.
