? about drilling for pyrometer

I am wondering if this is OK, I have the manifiold off to replace gaskets and install the 16cm housing. I don't have a pyrometer yet but want to go ahead and drill/tap the hole. Will the hole be 1/4 or 1/8 pipe. I will be using a di-pricol pyro to match my boost gauge.

1/8" pipe for the pyro. You can plug it with a pipe plug until you are ready.

What they said, but you might want to put some anitseize on that plug. A few heat/cool cycles and it might not want to come out.

The Isspro's used to be. When I got mine they had a little "adder" slip in the directions stating to ignore the drill & tap size and to use a "R" drill and 1/8"NPT tap. I used a 21/64" bit because I couldn't find a "R" to save my life.

Worked out great.

I assume that you have the thermocouple that you are going to put into the exhaust manifold? I wouldn't recommend drilling holes in your exhaust without having something to plug into it...

Anyways, the size of the hole depends entirely on the kind of thermocouple or pyrometer probe that you buy. Most are 1/4 inch, but there are a good number of 1/2 inchers out there. (The one I bought from Autometer was a 1/2 inch.) There might even be a few metric ones floating around, I don't know.

Other than that, before you drill remember to take the turbo off to avoid shrapnel in the impellor, to stuff a oily rag into the manifold to avoid getting shrapnel in your valves and to use the high-temp anti-seize...

Went ahead and drilled and tapped the hole out for 1/8 pipe fitting. Went smoothly, no problems. Used the plug I took out of the head for the boost gauge to plug the hole, with never-sieze on the threads. Should have it back together the next day I'm off.

Remember this is pipe thread. Measure the inside diameter of the pipe, not the threaded hole. I wouyld be VERY surprised if a pyro was 1/2 pipe thread. I would be surprised if a pyro was bigger than 1/4".
