running engine while drilling
running engine while drilling
hey guys, iam considering to drill for my pyro gauge, and use the
"run engine while drilling trick". If you totally tape of the exhaust
how long will the truck run? Is this a good method to use? will it be effective if i drill right above the turbo in the down pipe?.......
and i know that it is always better to remove the turbo..... just looking at other options.

I just drilled and tapped mine then idled the engine. I've done several this way with no ill effects. Yes above the turbo is a good spot however I put mine on top of the manifold since my drill and bit would not fit in the engine bay sideways. You can see my installation in my pics.
If you have an air compressor... Instead of starting my truck with the exhaust taped up, I ran my air compressor hose into my tailpipe regulated down to about 45PSI (stuff it in with a rag). Then I had my Shop Vac going with the inlet prompt right next to where I was drilling. The little bit of pressure from my compressor blew the shavings out as my drill pushed through the manifold wall and my Shop Vac sucked everything up. I ran a magnet into the hole after and was only able to get one tiny little shaving.

The truck will idle fine with tailpipe completely taped off. Just remember to start off with a really small drillbit and work your way up till you get to the proper size for tapping.
