Question 93 I/c 5.9

First of have to say great site .
Well this is what i got to ask you guys and gals.
I got a 93 I/C 5.9 Cummins it has about 190,000 on her the guy i bought it off said it ran great tell he crashed it.The rad and intercooler were sreewed in the crash but it still runs and no smoke or leaks, also it has a 5 spd getrag. Now i will be swapin the drivetrain into a 73 Chev Dually 2x4 to be used to tow my toys and race cars etc.The trailer loaded was about 10-15000 pounds, but here in the west coast of Canada we have lots of 6% grades to tow over and down.
So hear is the ????????????? what do i need to make this Cummins pull at the speed limit 60mph and still get ok milage.
I am good with my hands automotive technician by day
I know I will need an exhaust brake to slow me down but when it comes to a good power combo what should i do 300hp is a good number to aim for and 700TQ WHAT WILL GET ME THERE.O ya the trailer is 28 ft long and white so i would like to keed it white not black lol.Lay it on me any ideas from intercoolers to intakes. Also anyone tow like i do with there 1st gens? What are your combos.
Thanks

Welcome to the site. For more power out of your first gen engine, take a look at the tech facts section of this site. There is some great info on turning up your Bosch VE pump. Add to that some intake and exhaust airflow mods, and you may not be quite to 300HP, but you will have made a SIGNIFICANT improvement to your truck's performance.

As said above, pump "adjustments" and advancing the timing on it will do a lot of the increase toward 300hp. I can get 300 out of mine (with a stiff automatic), but the POD injectors will put out a little smoke at high power loaded down.

If you're anywhere just east of Vancouver (or willing to drive there), you can talk with some real experts at PDR in Surrey. Try Mark Wilson at 604-888-4159 or 866-888-9396 to get a good time to go in and chat.

Have fun and keep us tuned in to how you're doing.

Regards, DBF

You may need a stack to help keep that white trailer white. Seriously, you can tune the 5.9 to run with fairly minimal smoke but to make the power that you want, you're going to need fuel (pump adjustments and injectors) and that's going to mean generating enough smoke to turn the trailer gray.

Ignore anybody who tells you to run POD's in a tow rig.

Late model Powerstroke intercoolers seem to be readily available.

An HX-35 would heat things up really fast with a set of injectors. You'd probably be better off to upgrade the compressor housing to cram more air into it. Also, gauges, gauges, gauges! Invest in a good set of Isspro or Autometer pyro, boost and tranny temp gauges (since you are pulling a big load). I'd also throw on a piston lift pump to keep your VE happy with all the extra fuel you'll be dumping through it.

Once you get just the pump turned up, the amount power won't resemble anything stock like

Oh the 1st gen fits the bill more than adequately . I would think upgrading the compressor housing to an HTT stage III and throwing a set of Bosch 190 injectors (good towing injectors from my understanding), tweaking the pump and doing the 3200rpm spring will make the truck tow that trailer with ease.

Really, it all depends on how much money you want to spend. I'm sure you could get a really nice set of EDM injectors built that don't smoke too much and gain you great power, but they'd cost quite a bit.

The difference is in the injector tip. The POD has a SAC-style tip that basically holds an obscene amount of fuel like a holding tank. When the injector pops, SPLASH!, a bunch of fuel, and smoke, and haze, and heat etc etc...not the ideal towing injector. The 190's are jsut a bigger version of the stockers and are an excellent choice for towing. Don't focus too much on the 300 HP thing. The 1st gen engines make LOTS of torque for a given horsepower. Torque is what will keep you chugging at 60 over those hills. 190's, a hybrid turbo (hx 35/40 etc.) and an intercooler from a late model powerstroke and some water/meth for the steepest of grades will (I think) make you a happy camper...or hauler, as it were
