93 518 auto to 94 47RH swap
Im a bit surprised that there arnt more people that have done this swap.
There are many that have done the gear box updates.
Im interested in hearing more about the actual swap on a first gen from a 518 to a second gen 12 valve trans.
Keep talking guys.

Well guys, I picked up the 47RH from the 95 Dodge V-10 yesterday. It looks good on the outside as far as clean, but it doesn't look like it has been cleaned up.(If you know what I mean). The torque convertor is there, but of course it won't work with the diesel, and I have ordered the governor weight kit to replace the gas weights. I am going to have the transmission shop look in it to check it out and they said the best thing to do while it was out and they were checking it is to update the valve body. The guy at the trans shop says these transmissions when updated and beefed up with a good torque convertor are very stout transmissions and hold up very well to pulling heavy loads.
Now I need to go over the things I need to change and do to make the swap, and I hope if I have missed anything below you guys will remind me. I am gathering up all of the things I will need and I don' t want to tear the truck down until I have EVERYTHING I need.
Things needed to swap a 93 518 to a 95 47RH from a V-10 truck:
1) Diesel torque convertor
2) Governor weight kit for diesel
3) Starter for a 94-newer diesel truck
4) 2nd gen flexplate
5) Modify the crossmember as needed
6) Shorten driveshaft as needed
7) Seperate switch to control lockup
Have I overlooked anything???
Thanks guys,
Scott

Correct getrag and nv4500 bellhousing patterns are different, but I believe that 47RH/RE and NV4500/5600 bellhousing adaptors that bolt to the engine are the same. (someone please correct me if I'm wrong)
I may be wrong here, but I think the adapters are only used on the manual transmission trucks. I know the adapter is different betwen the getrag and the NV, but if I remember correctly I thought my 518 trans case bolted directly to the engine block. I believe the additional inch needed you guys are talking about for the thicker torque convertor is made into the 47RH transmission case and bolts directly to the engine block also. Again, I am no expert on this, (if I was I wouldn't asking so many darn question), but someone else chime in and give their opinion also.
Thanks
Thanks
scottmn1,
The A518 and the 47RH are the same length, in fact externaly there is very little difference, casting dates and there should be reenforcing webbing around the rear servo housing. The adaptor plate is where they added the extra 1", like you said for the converter clutch. That is what you need to aquire for conversion.
The cummins is nice in the fact that it will accept a large array of different size/style bellhousings adaptors, as any good engine that has industrial roots should.

OK, you guys have convinced me I was wrong.
Thats what I get for relying on my memory from when I bolted that 518 in back over a year ago. I just can't remember that adapter plate being there. DUH.......Anybody have that one inch thicker adapter plate from a 94-95 laying around. Sounds like I'm gonna need it.
Oh, and by the way to each of you, please accept my humblest apologies for second guessing you guys.

Yep, Went and looked under the hood of the truck to see for myself. I now see that "about an inch thick" plate between the engine block and the transmission. The oil and grease had the seam between the plate and engine covered up and I just thought it was part of the engine block. There's a good example of the old saying "never assume"........
Thanks JD for the info on 94-03 will work...That will make it easier to find
