Did an inspection after my sister complained of them making noise. SHe's owned the truck for about 10 yrs and 30000mi. I saw the outer pad wearing much worse than the inner and figured the caliper was sticking and decided to go ahead and redo. Man what a project this is turning out to be. Drivers side bearings all galled up and the races felt like washboards. Passenger side not too bad but replacing both side anyways. Rotors too thin to turn so replacing them too.Tons of rust and dirt to clean out and getting this thing back to spec.

HUGE shout of thanks to BC847 for his post "Rebuild your front D60 4x4 brakes" on this process on here. Its like having a buddy here right next to me doing this.

Rotors should be here tomorrow and I can get this thing back together and take a look at the back brakes. Drivers side fronts look really washed out so I asked my sister if she'd been driving in the river with this thing and she told me the only thing she did was drive into a flooded subdivision around here (Cle Elum, WA) to rescue her boyfriend and his Toyota 4Runner that he's so proud of. I told her that in the future if she drives this thing with the wheels under water for a stretch of time, to let me know so I can come out and repack the bearings. Sound right to you guys?

Anyway, here are some pics:

- bearing races, Hard to tell but they felt like washboards when you ran your finger over them.

- all galled up and really rough when rotating it even when greased up.

- same as the inner only outer.

- kinda rough but not too bad where the bearings rest. I'm cleaning them up with some fine sanding and relubing

If that was my truck, I'd replace that spindle hub. That's nasty, and is going to ruin any new bearings you put on there.


You might be sorry, just patching er up, as any slop in the bearing / hub clearance will destroy the new bearings.

NJT, if those bearings actually rode on that crap I would replace the spindles. As it is, they (the bearings) rotate on an inside race that is between the bearing and the spindle. Not like the old days when they actually rode against the spindle thank goodness.

That spindle looks HORRIBLY pitted. I wouldn't run it if it wasn't and emergency.....

The bearings don't ride on the spindle though. I think polishing it up would do the trick.

Better take a look at the diff oil. I'll bet it's wet too. And since you're in there and it's been under water, I'd take a hard look at the U-joints and internal spindle bearings as well. Much easier to do it now.

Just make shure the race fits fairly snug on the spindle, if it does you will be fine, if it's loose thats not a good thing.
