Question '92 CTD fuel heater leaking need help!

I am working on a '92 d-250 at work. I just had the inj.pump and injectors rebuilt and got it running today. After I got it running I was checking for leaks and right on top of the fuel filter I noticed a stream ofuel coming out of the plug area. We are in the South Texas area and it rarley gets below 40 degrees. The dodge dealer wants $267.00 for the heater that will probably never even see actual service My Question is, have any of you guys figured out a way to eliminate or bypass the heater? This is not the first one I've seen leak so I'm sure you guys have dealt with this too. Any help will be appreciated! Thanks. Joseph.

Have you tried replacing that square shoulder "o" ring that seals the heater to the head?

I just replaced mine recently... wannadiesel mentioned that you could leave the heater out of the system if you can find a shorter "spud" to screw up in there in the place of the spud that is there... the one you have to remove to remove the heater...

Well, I'm pretty sure the seal is not leaking but rather, the heater itself is leaking. I haven't taken the heater out yet and it has been years since I've had one apart. If you can take it out and shorten up the "spud" I may just do that. I will check the o-rings first but any other suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks rockfoot!

There has been much discussion about this in recent months.

I personally had THREE seperate fuel-heater leaks at the same time.

On two trucks, I replaced the O-ring seal with a new one and, so far, no leaks.

On my personal truck, the one that I am often thousands of miles from home in, after having the whole mess screw off with the filter, on the roadside---where else---, I got the proper heater elimination filter-stud and completely did away with the heater.

Search my posts, or simply search the 1st Gen. section, and there you will find the Cummins part-number for the heater-eliminating stud, and also the various part-numbers for replacement seals (there are a bunch).

Thank you sooooo much for all the help. I told one of the other senior mechanics at work about how awesome this site is and I knew there would be a solution in no time at all after I posted what our situation was. You guys are truly what the spirit of this great country is all about! Only in America! Thanks everyone.

Is the gasket above the fuel heater the same gasket for the filter?

no.. the gasket/"o" ring for the heater is square shouldered and seperate from the heater.... The gasket for the filter is fitted into the filter..

The filter gasket is smaller diameter and thicker.

In a pinch, you might find a plain old O-ring that will suffice for the heater O-ring.

My local parts-store has O-ring material that they cut to length and "weld" together, when a large diameter ring is needed.

The correct part-numbers for the right ones are floating around in these forums somewhere; I would buy about a dozen to have on hand.

Hey Fellas, It was the square ring between the heater and the hsg. Dodge wanted $64.00 for the "gasket" so I made an o-ring to fit in there and it worked out just fine. Thanks again guys! Joseph

If you want to spend $9 and get the new filter elimination short nipple deal, go to a Case/IH tractor dealer and order one or a Cummins dealer. Tell the Case dealer it is for a stationary irrigation motor or they also use that type of motor in tractors, etc.

Did the $64 gasket come with vasaline? If you know what I mean?
