I recently tried to find a replacement filter for this ASA CAI that someone modded onto my D250, but they no longer make them. I guess I'll try to find a random one that fits, but... Does this mod even make sense? Seems unusual for people to add CAIs to 1st Gens, just based on some online searching.
Pretty sure turbo is stock.
I have no love for those type of filters, sure they might flow a bit more air and make your turbo "sound" cool but they also do not filter the air very well. I have had piece of straw actually go through one of those filters then get jammed up inside a carburetor.....if a piece of straw can pass through think of all the small particulate matter that is going through! After that incident I switched to regular paper filters.
Also as a commercial trucker of 20 years you will never see a filter like that on a commercial rig....paper element filter only. Take a look in the sticky for the thread on BHAF.
Also, you never want to be sucking hot air from under the hood. The stock breather took air from the front of the grill just behind the bumper. The BHAF does the same only more so. Cold air is way much better than more hot air.
I've always wanted to use one of these on my truck with the inlet either through the hood or through the fender using an inlet hood to keep the rain out of the paper element...I just need to engineer a way to make it look right, and seal off the hole in the sheetmetal from the weather...They are made in various sizes up to 1324 CFM......Ben

Thanks I'll look into switching to one of those! Soooo, this filter is in terrible shape and sounds like you're saying even when they're in good shape they're junk. I sometimes use the truck daily when my car is in the shop, and I live down a dirt road. Can't imagine how much dust & other crap has gotten through... What can I do to check for any potential damage?
Remove the intake tube and use a white paper towel and wipe the inside of the turbo....see if the paper towel comes away dirty or not, that will tell you if fine particulate has been getting through.
I sat in on a maintenance session today at the Cummins plant and they reinforced how crucial a good air filtration system was. The engineer said to look at the center bolt/nut on the intake side of the turbo and see if it had any dust/dirt on it. Also look at the leading edge of the vanes.
I’ve had the ASA intake and filter on mine for 15 years with no problems and no dirt passing through the filter. Just go to your local auto parts store and get a filter recharge kit. Clean the filter and re-oil it per the instructions and it will be fine. Those filters are available on the web if you do a search for diesel air filters. It’s a good system that works well.

I bought a BHAF but don't think I can install it without some modifications and I don't have time for that at the moment... need to get this thing changed quickly!

I have an amsoil eaau4091 filter on mine with a similar intake. They are a dry filter that doesn't require oiling like k&n and so forth.

Look at www.spectreperformance.com and you can imput your filter’s measurments to order the right one. I need to pull mine and do the same so I can order a spare for mine.
Thanks for the filter suggestions... I got a Spectre filter from AutoZone that fits. It's a smaller surface area than the K&N that was on there and I'll probably change it out soon but I needed a quick fix.
There was a light coating of dust in the intake tube, and the turbo blades have little sooty black deposits on them.
I wiped a spot clean of dust at the opening so you can see the difference
Is there anything I should do to check for damage from the contaminates?

Don't pay any attention to anyone saying those type of filters don't filter properly. If maintained right, they filter fine. Been running them for over 20 years with no problems.

I agree, I have been running a k&n for 20 years. All one has to do is maintain it as instructed. I don't see how a properly oiled filter could filter worse than dry paper (or whatever). It is a bit like the no water in antifreeze debacle...Mak
