'90 model cummins question

i have found a '90 model std. cab, with 5-spd. for $4000. i don't care about body as i'm going to build a crew-cab. hauler, is it worth my time to have to add on the inter-cooler, and is the rotary just as good as the inline, or should i continue looking for '93 model?? i want leaf springs in front as i have a '94 and hate it.
Re:'90 model cummins question

89-93's all use the same pump, so a 93 won't help you if you want an inline.

I love Corky Bell's comment about intercooling turbo motors:

"Intercooling should not be considered icing on the cake, it should be considered more cake!"

IMO there's no better thing you can add to a turbo motor than an intercooler. you won't see all the benefits of more psi and such to near as great of a degree without intercooling, so you might as well do it first!

Re:'90 model cummins question

i'm just debating about waiting for a truck that is setup already or going for this one.
are the rotary pumps just as good as the inline?? can they be hopped up as well?? i havn't looked at previous posts as i havn't considered this year truck till now.
i'm going to put a crewcab body on it for a tow rig, so everything will be custom built.

Re:'90 model cummins question

The inline pumps can move more fuel, so they can make more power. The rotary pumps are not weak, DTR member Old Smoky recently got 450 RWHP out of his truck. The nice thing agout the rotary pumps is that they are easily adjustable - no fuel plates to buy, just twiddle with screws and such, but they can't move enough fuel to make the kind of power that the inline pumps are capable of. I think using a 1st gen donor truck will make this project simpler than using a 2nd gen truck as the donor because all the barts will basically be bolt ons. Fitting the 2nd gen stuff on the old crewcab will take more work.

MM, Do yourself a favor and look on E bay. There are Cummins Dodges on there for less than 4 grand. Keep looking, I was able to find a D-350 clubcab/5spd for $2000, and all I needed to do was put new bearings in the trany . I looked and there are a couple of potential doaners on there now.

Re:'90 model cummins question

i'll check e-bay out, but i'm planning severe body mods so don't want nice body.
i'm going to build a mini- semi, no box just flat deck with 5th. wheel plate maybe even kenworth/peterbuilt grill on a scaled down hood, then modifiy top of cab into mid-roof sleeper style, then a single step flatbed, air ride trailer for two vehicles.
