727 Performance build ??

Wondering if any of you 727 guys out there know of any tricks or maniditory upgrades that should be done while rebuilding one. I just picked one up with 24k original miles on it!! I am putting it behind a 500 hp p-pump!! I plan on a full manual valve body, upgrade to a steel planetary and not sure what convertor Im going with yet. I know everyone has a chubby for goerend, but I called there and wasn't to pleased with the customer relations!!. Any ideas welcome, ripping it down next week.

yea I had the same feelings after calling there. Dave is the one you have to talk to and he is always too busy. I was gonna buy a different brand but I ended up getting a good deal on mine used from a member here. It is definately a good tc but I am sure there are others just as good. there is a lot you can do to the trans it just depends on how much you want to spend.

Steel planetary, kolene steels, red alto clutches, kevlar band, shift kit

500HP i'd do something with the input shaft too...maybe billet or hardened.

A machine picks up the phone, press 0. Daves secretaries screen the calls, take down a bunch of info on truck and what you need. Then, if he's available, you can talk to him. I think they get tons of tire kickers looking for free advice but don't buy anything.

Mine just has a good rebuild, a transgo, and a Goerend converter. If I had to do it over I for sure would have got the steel planet, that's what seems to fail at c.500 to the wheels for most people. Oh, and I'd get a trans blanket, just in case!

Or you leave message after message and a few weeks later still no call back

YA, dont really want to bash on goerend. Seems to have a good product that everybody wants, but defintly needs to work on customer relations. It works 2 fold, one person gets a good convertor and tells 2 buddies. One person calls gets the run around and gets tickerd off and tells all his friends and puts it online!! But thas neither here or there.

So it sounds like Im on the right path, steel planetary, shift kit, and good clutches and a good convertor and have fun. Sounds pretty simple!!

i dont think the 500 hp is a problem with 727. the huge amount of torgue of the diesel is the problem. have a buddy that i built one for in a 65 belv. which produced well over 500 hp. ran low 6s high 5s in the 1/8 mi. with 3400 lb car. trans was basically stock except for manual valve body. 700+ passes and one cracked converter hub the trans was still working fine when he parked it and went to a smaller car with diff. set-up

In my truck I have toasted a rear planet and a stock output. Input was billet from the 1st rebuild. Only on shop in the country sells a billet output for a 4wd 727 in our trucks... and its not cheap plus you MUST run a manual VB in the tranny (which you said already). Also upgraded to a 5 pinion planet gear. I have stupid money in my 727... I would go a different route if I was not wanting to stick to a straight up 1st gen (VE, 727, ect)

I broke teh output coming up on boost for a launch (around 15psi) and the plant on teh 2-3 shift with my reverse manual VB.
