727 dead tranny again :(
Hi i have a 727 90 cummins diesel which is mostly used for snow removal this is very hard on auto transmissions but is the only way to do a quick job always enganing rev and 1st gear. This is the 3rd time it fails 2nd had planetary gear fail and was driven on the open road like this (not by me) then my dad made me drive it doing some forward / reverse in the yard with it and guess what happened... casing broke in result and it was blamed on me. Now problem is that if i put it in 2nd or drive it won't engage and will make a broken gear missing thooth noise howerver if i engage in first and wind it to lets say shifting speed then put it in second it will shift to second then i wait again for correct rpm and put it in drive it will go to drive... (so i guess the clutches are ok doesn't smell like burnt tranny) I also noticed the sound when i shift from reverse and put it in 1st for a fraction of a sec from time to time.Yes I had to run it since we had a foot and a half of snow and had no choice to use it this way.
Now i was wondering can any 727 4x4 non lock 3 speed tranny bolt up to the cummins 5.9 and transfercase? I heard there's different types of 727's but unsure if all 4x4's 3 speeds are all the same? I want to get a heavy duty with better clutches valve body strengtened planetary tranny that will hold up for next 20 yrs but at a cheap price... Would an old 727 from a 360 fit?
Or Are the big block 727's the ones im looking for?

recommends a 'hybrid'; gen 1 case - w/ gears from a '96 (don't know if there are other Gen2 years ok) and of course add one of their $750 converters. total=~$3700 USD minus $700 core
I would assume this could be done for ~$1500, but not likely with experience that DTT brings (lots of beefy trannies out there)
keep me posted, as I can't justify a $4k tranny in my $5k work truck, either

Ouch pretty expensive, specially since im gonna keep the core i think i will rebuild it with sturdier parts, better planetarys, etc in the summer so i have a spare in case of.At least the clutches are not burned in it....I'm guessing there's something wrong with the valvebody...? I found one in canada at 1000 but just regular oem rebuilt type. My torque has a very low stall so plan on keeping it. Dtt's claims 100 degress less on their converters thats quite impressive though, wonder how they do it... but at the size of the trans rad thats on the truck it doesn't over heat....
What is the difference/advantage with the 96's gears ?

The 96 front carrier is maleable iron as opposed to your aluminum one, and they have 5 planet gears instead of 4. The spline on the output shaft where the carrier goes changed in 94, so you have to use later shaft or respline the carrier. If you really wanted to get carried away you could use 48re parts, 6 gear front and rear planets but you have to use everything including the annulus gears, the sun gear and drive shell.
