6.9/7.3 IDI Radiator in 91 D350

Well Keep checking up on my updates. If any of you have seen the Rads used in the older pre 1995MY Ford diesel trucks are huge. Well I purchased one today with shroud, and plan to cut/weld/cut/weld it into my truck.

Luckily I have a Doner truck that I will work with 1st. But The swap will be done, regardless

I never get the temperature gauge up to normal, while all the Dodge guys are complaining about over-heating.

Then, I look under the hood and see those little Model T radiators and see the reason why.

Those Ford radiators are more like it, ain't they??

LOL Yeah...must of been an International idea...Not a Ford one

But then again, Cooling a 444 ci 7.3 is different than cooling a 5.9 361ci. Im bound and determined to get this thing to work though, even if I have to mount it on the roof..

BTW, I also picked up a huge tranny cooler from an older Ramcharger-its about the size of an A/C Condensor that will act as my Tranny Cooler.

Hey Dave, if you ever get the chance, Harry's U-pull-it, Pennsburg,Allentown,Hazelton always has a great selection of D-I-Y parts to cross breed in.

the ford radiator will probably do better than a dodge one since they are bigger. i know my brother put a newer ford radiator in front of his CTD and before it blew up he didnt have any fans on it and it never got hot even sitting and idling. i know that my 4 core GM radiator doesnt have any problems cooling my engine even without a fan.

One the biggest probs with the non intercooled trucks is the inlet and outlet are on the same side. If you use a infra red thermometer theres about a 45 degree differance in mine from right to left side. Water takes the easiest path, it has no reason to go across it just goes down.

LOL Rad is still leaning against the wall. HOWEVER I did just plumb in a remote Fuel filter from a 1985 6.9 Ford diesel, Ill have to start getting pictures. I made a bracket using the 3 holes in the front of the intake, then ran 1 5/16 line with a ferrel to the LP and another to the IP. Also, it has a port on the filter housing to check fuel pressure right there. It works great-didnt notice a thing, other than a larger fuel filter, easier to access, and that the real reason for the install-a leaking line-is now fixed.

I just left the old filter on the truck. Since Ford's IDI spec fuel pressure is the same as ours, I thought it would work good, and it does. So far 500 miles on her.

I need to see pictures of this fuel-filter install.

I happen to have a 1985 6.9 fuel filter, brackets and all.

I can't imagine where I could have acquired something like that .

Ill see what I can do-Ive been meaning to get some pics up. I did not use the factory bracket,just the filter housing itself.

Remove both of the factory threaded fittings, and toss. I went to NAPA and got 2 adaptor fittings to take 5/16 brake line to 1/4 NPT, so my line screwed right in. I removed my banjo's and then cut the male compression fittings going to the IP and to the LP, since I didnt have much luck finding them locally. I also bought 2 ferrels 5/16". Cut off the flare(on new 5/16 brake line) going to the IP, smooth and insert the IP male end and then a ferrel. Yes, you will have to bend your new lines.

Then do the same for the LP.

As for the bracket I started with flat stock, 2 1/2" wide and drilled 3 holes to line up with the ones right behind the oil fill tube, and horizonal with the intake. Then take another piece and weld so the flat is vertical and extends back toward the booster, making an L shape. I then drilled 2 more holes, and torched out the opening for the IP line, just like that factory bracket has. I bolted her up, and ran my lines.

I addressed this problem of the inlet and outlet on the same side thanks to Wannadiesel who sugested a baffle inside the upper tank about one third of the way across the top . Also went to a 3 core rad. Installed it yesterday and tested it in drivway the water does come across all the way when the thrmo opens Am going to pull the 5th wheel this weekend and test it out. My wife says it better work ($400.00 ) SOOO I hope it works.

My truck is a Ford to begin with, so I already have the huge Ford radiator.

The top hose is on the right side and the bottom hose is on the left.

On my Cummins, as you all know, both hose outlets are on the right of the engine.

I used a custom-bent section of aluminized exhaust tubing as a crossover pipe to get the coolant from the bottom of the radiator to the right side of the truck.

I used a stock Dodge/Cummins bottom hose on the right side, and a 90* elbow hose on the left.

If you do install the Ford radiator in the Dodge, you can also go this route.

As a side note, I have pulled several big loads, up some stiff grades, in hundred degree weather, and have yet to see the temperature gauge above 180*; all this with a twenty one year old, plugged up, radiator that should be replaced.

When I get a new radiator, I will probably have to put a winter cover over the grill to get up to operating temperature.
