most likely built just like a big truck jake, on a small scale, oil pressure actuated.

 

Good old American Jake Brake. I've Driven heavy trucks with both styles of brakes. The mercedes you have wind up to almost redline to build any kind of braking pressure whereas the Jake work better at lower RPM's. I would love one of those on my truck. Probably very pricey.
