4wd Problem

Since we purchased our 93 about 2 years ago we've had the problem of the low end of the 4wd(4L) to show a bit of a problem. It never came off much as a 'big issue' because we've use the 4H but now that I have some time to do some maintenance I came to the realization that it should be fixed. Anyhow, when you turn in the locks on the wheels, and attempt to pull the stick into 4L it wont go. However if you reef on it, she'll go in but with an excessive grinding until you shove it back into the 2wd, 4H or neutral. What I figure the problem is, since it was a plowtruck when we bought it, the people before us stripped something using it too roughly(same thing which happens to the reverse in some trucks I'm assuming). If this is the case, can someone elaborate on how it should be fixed and/or give me a better and more explained answer if it should be something else.

Mike

Try putting the tranny in neutral and let the truck roll at a few mph then shift it in.

had the same problem on my 86' ford f250 supercab. you can try one of two things: turn the motor off and stick in in low; or, roll it forward a bit like "ares" mentioned in his quote above. if this doesn't work, then

If the roll it trick doesn't work, try bumping the throttle a few times and pulling. If that doesn't work, combine the two.

If that doesn't work.......?

To shift in and out of 4L, you should be in neutral. For 4H, it's best to be coasting, no load on the drive train, to take it out.
