48re into a 91 D250....Is it possible?.....
How would one go about putting in a 48re into a 1991 dodge d250 lwb 2wd ? I have a friend who is parting out a truck an has one. I'm going to get for a good deal. So I was just wondering what it would take to put it in my 1st gen. What does it take? Any help greatly appreciated.
Thank you

I just happened to be doing a rare cruise-through on here and saw your question.
IMO, you'd be best to steer clear of that transmission, as it would take a lot to even stand a chance of making it work.
I think an early 48RE or a 47RE could be muddled out easy enough.
If I were an automatic person, hands down, for simplicity, the 47RH (1994-1995) is the cat's meow.

Thanks mark for all your help. I don't use the truck for racing or drag sled pulling. It's just a plan old work truck with a utitily bed an just gets me back an forth the my job sites. So it not like I need some awesome transmission for the truck. I was just thinking about rebuilding the a518 I have. Maybe it will be alittle cheaper.
The only reason I'm thinking about this is because my transmission went out today... So I'm trying to figure out the best an cheapest way to rebuild the one I have. The last one lasted 4years. What do u think?
Thank u

Rebuilding the 518 will be cheaper, since you won't have to come up with all the supporting parts for it, much less figure out a computer to make it work.
With the ever greater scarcity of Diesel 47RH cores, the 518 is probably your cheapest option and if you use a tighter converter, it will still put the power down better than it did as an OEM transmission.

If you were wanting the "best of the best" between what you have, some of the 48RE parts are superior to the 518 parts, but I am not an automatic tranny builder, so I'd just steer you wrong there.
Chances are that you wouldn't need to rebuild the valve body, just a flushing out may be all that's necessary, especially if it was working prior to the tranny quitting.

When it was working the trans was delayed between gears. From second to third it would rev real high an go into third real hard. No shift kit.. It had been doing this for the last few months couldn't figure it out. But it took a crap today. So I will be fixing it for good now.
Another option would be to turn your OD non-lockup trans into a lockup......

Would be cheaper than finding a 47RH and all you would have to do would be get a 94-02 engine adapter plate and add lockup control.

To turn your 46rh into a lockup 47rh, you will need: 47rh valve body, lockup pump, lockup input shaft, lockup converter. It can and will fit in the a518 case MINUS the rear band unless yours is a 93 with the ribbed cage. 47rh has a WIDE low/reverse band as opposed to the thin a518 band. 48re parts will interchange with yours, mainly he 6 pinion planets and MUCH thicker sun shell. Wider washers for more support and larger bushings for the same reason. 48re direct drum is 5 clutches from the factory, and you can fit 6 alto high friction clutches and steels using the factory piston and pressure plate.
