48RE guts in a 518
Riflemanusmc you just got people googlein up clutchflite. I don't remember the last time I heard of one of those. The ultimate 1st gen automatic transmission. Are they even made anymore? Not a bad idea.
I put 48re planetaries in my 47rh and took care of both the weaker direct planetary and OD straight cut sun gear issue. Some of the differences were the number of splines on some of the clutch plates and different thrust washers. I used a special ring gear from PATC so that I could use the extra clutch plates I had. You just have to make sure you check your clearances and use the right thrust washers/snaprings neccesary. Archer is right, the later 95' 47rhs had the steel planetary and 15 degree sun gear. I got lucky and had 2 94's. I think it should work with a 518.

umm... lets see. do a full auto to manual swap with the cost of the trans/clutch and everything needed to convert, al the work to do the conversion. If you buy a new NV4500 its $1000 plus the clutch/bellhousing you'll need.
or buy a $200 floor shifter, a $238 manual valve body and you have a tire chirping fun rig that you control, top that off with a $650 Torque converter upgrade and then you have a fast tire chirping fun truck.

Oh well if you want O/d you could build up a 518 auto froma first gen and swap that in. converter/shift kit and its a reliable trans with a good O/d.

haha a gear vendors O/d unit is like $3000 but they're cool becuase they split the gears, basicly make it like a 6 speed auto and comes out to .78 o/d ratio.
the cheapest way to get o/d in a 727 truck is to find a used 518 from a 91.5-93 first gen and add a good converter/valve body and go. that .69 o/d with the 3.07 gear would be like 25+ MPG truck.
and fun
