3.07 W/Detroit Locker?

Ok, I know this one has been beat to death, but I still can't seem to find a clear answer. Detroit says they make a locker that will work with the 3.07's weird pinion offset, but I still want to confirm that it is a regular Dana 70, and not a Dana 70HD, and that it also has 35 spline axles...

I also heard an easy way to tell 70 vs 70HD was that the HD versions had 4-inch axle tubes versus 3.5 inch...anyone else know if this is true? I always heard that the 3.07s were 70HD's, but now all signs are pointing to them being regular 70s with 35 spline shafts and the weird pinion offset.

thanks guys

Jason

I believe they may actually be 70u's. If not, just a standard 70. No HD's were used in 1st gens, although, some some claim to have seen a couple with them but anybody can swap axles . Do you have the BOM number from the data tag or axle tube handy?

3:07/3:54/4:10 uses the same carrier assy. The difference is the axle housing.

Just make sure of your spline count before you buy. Most 3:07's used 35 spline axles.

On a fast glance the eastest way to tell a 71 rear axle. Look at the pic below. That rasied area at the 2:00 position outside of the cover footprint. 70's do not have that. Just the 71 axle.

DTS doesn't need that tag. There is a alpha numeric data imprinted on the ring gear.

Were the RG says DANA on it's edge, there is a letter followed by 5-7 digits. With that, and the number of splines on the axles, supposedly they can order what you need...

That's what they wanted when I called for parts for my Diff.

The rule of thumb is, if it has studded in axles it's a 35 spline, if it has bolt in axles it has 32 spline.

all 3 91 non i/c trucks we had all had the bolt in axles, but the 89 rear i have has studded in axles and the hub looks alot different than the 91-93 rears
