265<285?
265<285?
Ok...I need to buy new tires. The PO had put D range tires on my truck...and I'm gonna be throwing a 11 foot slide in camper on..while towing my rock toy.
Anyway, I've read some moving up to a 285 and picking up a little better milage. True?
Will the 285's fit well enough without having to lift the truck? It's a bone stock 92 Clubcab...3.54 gears.
Thoughts? Also, I'm thinking of trying the BFG A/T's. They came out in a E range with the 285's this year. I've had good luck with them in the past, but never with this kind of a load. The truck will be driven all over the West coast...so a bit of snow, ice and mud to where we wheel. I need a "little more" traction than your average towing tire. Thoughts on that? Thanks guys!

One of my dads friends is running 285 BFG AT in the D range on his stock 1992 regular cab, He said he didn't notice any differece in preformance and his MPG is still in the 21-22 range he is 5speed and 3.54's. Good to hear BFG came out with a E rating in that size. i'am planning on going up to the 285's on both my 1993 250 and 1999 2500, the 265's just look tiny.
i just put 285 pro comp a/t`s on my truck so far i love em they are awsome in the snow we just got 8 inches last week.....plus they have a 50,000 mile tread life warranty....more info on these tires can be found at www.procomptires.com
I've had Dunlop Radial Rover RVxt's in 285/75 R 16 on for a couple of years now. With stock springs (pretty tired - 1/2 inch between the spring and snubbers) I had just a very light rub at full lock right and crossed up. With 2 inches of lift, there is no contact at all. Wear has been reasonable, though I'm hardcore about rotation, snow and wet traction are good and they are QUIET. I run empty most of the time so I use 45 psi front and 40 rear. Mine are load range D, don't know if an E is available.
I have 285 BFG ATs on my 1993 reg cab, they barely rub the front of the drivers side fender molding when I am cutting and turning pretty fast or cutting and hit a bump.
I just sold a 92 ex. cab and I never tried to fit the 285 on it because it sat lower than my 1993.
I sold it to my cousin, and the next time I saw him, it had 285 Goodyear MTRs. His don't rub at all.
I always ran E rated tires on the 1992 because towing with a slide in camper.
I couldn't find an E rated tire with an AT tread that wasn't high priced.
I couldn't comment on fuel mileage, always kept the same size tire on both trucks.

Thanks for all the replies. I'll go ahead and buy the 285's since it seems a little rubbing is possible, but not a huge issue. Even if the milage stays the same, that works for me.
I'm not super excited about buying E rated tires, they aren't cheap.

I considered 285s for my truck but the camper is pretty high and I wanted to keep sway to a mimimum so I got the 265s. They work pretty well for me. Let us know how the 285s work with the camper on, if they work good I'll go that way next time. The 265s do look a little small.
Will do. That is a concern, which is why I was asking if the fit without any lift! I don't need this pig to be blown all over the road much.
What got me started was a guy I work with has a 00 Superdummy on 285's. Of course he's quite a bit taller than me stock. He runs a 10.5 Big foot which is a pretty heavy camper. Tows a boat too. He ended up going with airbags to keep sway to a minimum.
I honestly would love a dually for what I need/want the truck to do, but this truck fell into my lap so it's gotta work.
I will keep you updated when I throw the tires on. Camper is close to 3k loaded...and my 4Runner and trailer is in the 6000 range.
