235/85/16 tires on 8" wide rim

So I have a set of aluminum 16x8" rims and purchased the tires, not realizing that the rims aren't recommended for 8" wide rims. It appears that it should be a 7.5" wide rim or less.

So i mounted a couple of them, and the sidewall definitely bulges from the tread to the bead. I have pretty much convinced myself that I need narrower rims.

Thoughts?

thanks, Aaron

I've seen it done alot, 245's on 16x8 and 235's as well. I don't think anything will happen,

I would climb in your truck with them on

Problems will occur, as with any tire, if they're severely under-inflated.

Otherwise, won't make much of a difference...

Unless of course you forget to torque your lug nuts, then I'm not getting in the truck with you either..

A 235 can mount on a rim 6 - 9 inches wide. My rims are 16 x 8 and have 235/85/r16's on them. If they aren't supposed to be on there, then Discount messed up. And they messed up on the previous tires as well. Don't know where you are getting your info.

You will be fine, i have ran 235/85/16's on 16x8s on a couple different trucks with out one single problem. 16x7's look a bit better though.

So most of the tires I look at say recommended rim width 6-7.5". So an 8" rim is only .5" wider than recommended. So it would probably be ok but I think I am going to play it safe and put them on some 7" wide rims.

thanks for the responses!

There is nothing dangerous with that combination; they just look a bit out of place on the wider wheel.

no kidding they look weird. So no ill-effects on handling or tire wear?

Keep in mind that i've got about 10k miles on some bridgestone duelers on the dodge, 265/75/16 and they have maybe 4/32 of treat left. Needless to say my driving environment is HARD on tires.

the only problem I could see would be off roading, your side walls will have a larger profile and could get hit by stuff

well I keep flopping back and forth, it seems that I would be fine with the 8" rim, but I really don't like the way it looks and that really bothers me. I don't plan to offroad, but maybe some fire roads to get to a camping spot. I am really leaning towards some 7" rims if I can get a hold of some....

Seems like a lot of trouble for .5 of an inch (either side). Might slap a tire on each size rim and take a look at it just to make sure. Seeing things, comparing... vs. the trouble for something you don't know why you got twisted about after getting four new rims. Might consider 6 inch wides too, that would be an inch each side, should be more noticeable. Sort of baffled, running those tires on 8 inch wides is common place. I guess you know what you like.

Going with a narrow tire on a wide wheel poke and stretch. The VW/BMW crowd is big into them from an old German law where the tire couldn't extend past the fender. Well, they liked the bigger wheels. So with a little ether, they "blew" them up on to the bead. Depending on the stretch, you are either getting flats once a month or every day....

The 8-on-6.5" Ford 16x7 are fitted on Econolines up to at least 2007 where they were out on the F-series with the advent of the Superduty. Just scroe'd a set and pulled the prints to make sure... and then slid one onto my Dodge 'cause I wanted to be absolutely certain. $30 each. Have the dealer mount them on a balance machine so you can check them for true running; out of 5 they had I passed on one that wasn't straight.
cheers
Douglas
