21 Mpg!!!

....just got back from my first long trip in my pickup. It was about 400 miles on a curvy highway so I never went above 60 mph.
Not bad for an automatic, 4x4, 15 year old truck, with a quarter million miles on it!!!

Its funny, when I was buying it, I asked the previous owner what type of mileage he got. He didnt keep track, and I told him that many people report 20 mpg. He didnt believe me. Actually I was a little skeptical too.

Im pretty happy right now!

ya that kind of fuel mileage is not uncommon at all, with my 91 5-spd. i get 24mpg at 55 and 23 at 70 and around 18 in town. and that is with 35x14.5 tires.

unbelievable isn't it?

I get 21-23. Going 60 MPH is the trick, keeping the tires inflated is another.

Yeah, the best MPG I ever saw out of my truck was on a trip where I never ran over 65, and most of the running was at 60. I get too bored going that slow.

ya i don't know why i get such good gas mileage to be totally honest i think the 5-spd really helps i have 3.54 gears. cuz i defenitely get better than anybody else i know around here. and my injectors are starting to get bad (smokes always) to be totally honest with you this truck has towed cattle its entire life before i bought it with 211,000 miles. and well she is broke in well, but not romped on of course when towing so i think that has allot to do with it. at least i see that with gas motors anyways if you break them in a certain way they have a tendency to run a certain way. so i think towing with a diesel for long trips is what they are made for so they will last the longest and run the best that way in my opinion.

I think the good mileage has a lot to do with the 5-spd tranny. I can easily get 23+MPG going 55-60 MPH range. My cousin just bought a 91.5 with a automatic and he gets maybe 15-16 MPH. We have the exact same mods done to our truck except my fuel screw is cranked in more, and he has a #16 housing, whereas i still have the old #18.5. Just kills him that i get better mileage and go faster

Got a little over 22mpg towing a 1,500lb trailer loaded with a 5Klb Full-size wagoneer packed to the gills with deer, hunting equipment, GP medium tent, etc.

5-speed NV4500, 4.11 gears, doing less than 60 (front end was all over - always has been a weird feeling front end and I rebuilt it end-to-end too.)

I have a 92 auto that is all stock and I pull 23mpgs at 65-70mph. Maybe hes driving it aggressively or something and that could account for the poor MPG's?

2wd or 4wd?

I guess i should mention we both have W250's. I'm guessing the NP205 transfer case might eat 1-2 MPG.

Mines 2wd. Yea I would imagine you lose at least 1-2 in the t-case.

I'm with Wanna. I can get pretty good MPG but that is just too slow. Also hard to get good mpg when the first 60 ft I am leaving marks on the road as my tires loose their tread.

What'd you do, drop to neutral and let the trailer push you downhill and coast up the next one?

No, forgot to mention we had the deer pushing.
