1st gen pistons vs 2nd gen pistons

Stumbled across a new "in the crate" 2nd gen short block today. What's the difference in the blocks, pistons ect. vs the 1st gen ? Somewhere I think I read where the piston were the only difference???? Is this correct or not? Thanks for your input.

As long as it's a 12 valve shortblock there is no reason you can't use it.

It is supposed to be, it was purchased to replace a shortblock in a 96 12v. The guy was taking the truck to the shop to have it replaced and got T-boned and totaled out the truck. The engine was never unwrapped until today when I got it home, it's been setting in his shop/barn since 02. No rust in the cylinders or even on the deck surface. Was well preserved.

Blocks, rods, crank are the same. There is a change in the first GEN non I/C vs.Non I/C pistons.. Bowl in the piston changed...Spray pattern of the injector.. 2nd GEN, you do mean a 12V block correct?

I have been told on another site that the IC 1st gens and the 96/98 2nd gens used the same spray angles. The nonIC and the 94/95 2nd gen's had the same spray angles.

The bowl in the top of the piston is differant. Non I/C piston has a bigger but the dowl is bigger/wider on the top. Do a search on I/C vs non I/C. VE vs P7100 pump pistons. The I/C pistons are a differant number. As far as what you have read.. Coudn't tell you. Look up Cummins numbers on then.....
