1st Gen Breathing Propane...?

I did a search on the subject, just looking around to see who's done it, and what has been said about it.

Anyone have any comments on it?

I'm just curious if a propane kit would be good at the top end of boost, just for that extra kick...

Someone on here built their own system...if you guys read this, can you post a write-up with parts needed? & some tech info?

I'm just thinking about a propane setup in the future..after the pump mods & injectors of course...

thanks...

I think propane is an either/or thing. If you're going to do propane, you shouldn't mess with the pump and injectors all that much. Propane drives cylinder pressures way up there, it's tough on head gaskets when you combine it with extra fuel and especially when you add timing. A propane fogged engine acts like one with advanced timing because the propane actually lights before the injector fires. Even on a stock truck, I'd put a coolant temp switch in the system to disable it until the water temp gets up to 160 or so in order to protect the head gasket.

Dave, thanks for the tip. I'm just trying to see if its worth it or not...I'm pretty sure I won't dabble into the propane thing anyways. It seems a little unsafe, much like n2o on gas motors that I'm more familiar with. No reason to decrease the life of a motor destined to go longer than most others. I'm pretty sure that the governer spring, pump tweaks, and injectors will put me where I want to be. Plus, if I desire a bit more "ooomph", I can play with different turbocharger components & boost levels whenever I want.

Jeremy,

There are some good results coming from water/methanol injection. There are one or two drawbacks like any other "mod" bit no biggie...

Wannadiesel is right. I built my own system about a year ago and helped GaCamper draw up his but never put it on mine because of my advanced timing on the pump and stock headgasket. Timing plays a critical role when you get to messing with LP.

I put a Bully Dog propane system on when I first heard of them and I can tell you that I am still not sure it was worth it. At first I thought it was worth i, but I dont even use it that much and when I put it on the dyno it only gave me 17hp 50 torque.

I also have a packbrake on my pickup and showing off one night I nailed the propane forgot to turn it off when I hit the brake big kabooooom flames out of the exhaust knocking and pinging then it leveled out and ran fine. Luckuly no damage, but it was very scary. Now I have tatle tale lights when I use the propane or my exhaust brake.

The only thing propane is good for is maybe barbeque, and just saying that you have propane on your pickup some people get intimidated. Hope this helps.
