1st gen Body/Engine/Tranny/TC on F550 Rolling chassis
1st Gen. Ram - All TopicsDiscussion for all Dodge Rams prior to 1994. This includes engine, drivetrain and non-drivetrain discussions. Anything prior to 1994 should go in here.
The plan is to keep this as low as possible, so will be using some flared fiberglass front fenders to tuck the front wheels as close to the body as possible. The super 60 is quite a bit wider too, so these will cover the extra width. Only trick with this is modifying the inner shroud to work.
The back will be a skirted flatdeck so will build to suit.

Came to my senses, dont think I will use the fiberglass flares. Think it would look out of place on a flatbed dually.
Had jokingly mentioned using 1st gen dually flares and modifying them to be a front flare, and started thinking seriously about that possibility. May end up trying it since it would really stick with the first gen styling ques, and just so happen to have the flares already to modify. Would shorten the flare by about a half so it only protrudes about 4 inches, and than fiberglass a lip that follows the contures of the front fender for a mounting surface. This would give me tire coverage as well as fender space to stuff some tires.
Have found the tires am going to run as well. 9r22.5 Toyo M608Z’s. They are 38x9 and have a nice aggressive tread pattern.
Those 4:30 gears will be nice with a 38-42ish inch tire. I have 4:10’s in my crew cab with 35” tires and an NV4500. I wish I had a 37-38” tire, as towing in 4th gear, puts me around 40mph. There’s plenty of low end grunt to get a trailer moving, but I’d prefer to run 1800-1900 rpms at 55mph in 4th. I’ve been looking into gear ratios for my axle set as well (I have 4:30’s), but I plan on running 395/85R20 military tires on mine, which is 46” tall. The best thing is, you’re doing your research NOW, before the project has started. You can start brain storming before you get the welder out. Subscribed! I can’t wait to see some pictures!
Those are some monster tires your planning on running. Guessing you are going to do single rear?
Yes, single rears. My project is aimed at being able to go pretty much anywhere and do most of anything. Mud, terrain, highway, towing etc. The plan is to build a Jeep, and if the Jeep breaks or gets stuck, the truck will be able to retrieve it and bring it back to the trailer.

Wow, after seeing the chassis, I’m starting to re-think my idea of building a custom frame. The nice thing is that the frame rails are pretty straight, without a lot of bends or steep kick-ups in the front or rear. This is going to be a very informative build. I wonder what the difference in frame rail width is, compared to a first gen Dodge. It’s got to be close!
