I am considering buying a 1st gen dually 4x4 automatic truck, and I would like for someone to give me an idea of what all is involved with swapping in a manual transmission?

Is it best to source a getrag or go ahead and use a NV4500?

Obviously I will need pedals, master cyl and slave cyl, clutch, bellhousing, transmission.

What is involved with properly cutting the hole in the floor for the shifter? Will I need a special sheet metal hump to go there?

What about the crossmember?

Would I also need to source a manual transmission steering column?

I want it to look exactly like it came from the factory.

i did not switch columns when i went auto-man. it confuses people...

i had to switch crossmembers, maybe i did not have to, but i had it, so i did.

i had to swap both driveshafts

i just guessed and cut a hole in the floor. i also made it a "removeable" trans hump. the rubber floor mat i have covers any edges or joints, so you dont see anything, or the fact the shifter hole is wayyy too big. i am not going fo factory looks.

 

Use whichever you can find for a price you are willing to pay, but don't pay extra for an NV4500. If you can find a donor truck that would be the simplest way, then you can rob the pedals, the whole driveline and the crossmember.
