I see in a sale close to me that there is going to be a 90 model with 4x4 & diesel ( auto. ) What do you think its worth if it`s in good shape? I`m just looking for a hobby truck. This means it want get driven alot but I don`t want junk. What do you think of the 90? Should I be looking at a different year? What was the first year cummins in a dodge?

3) 1993 is the best year they ever made, but I'm sure guys who own other years will have their opinions, too. They'll be wrong, but they're entitled to their opinions.
4) 1989, officially, though I've heard about 88's as well.

 

First model year cummins was 89's. They would have most likely been released in the fall of 88. Usually any build date after september is the next model year. The 90 will make a pretty good hotrod. The 727 3 speed auto is ok. The axles are 3.07 ratio which is N/A anymore so don't break it. My 89 is pretty quick. I have a fare amount of goodies in it.

I love the non intercooled 89-91 trucks, VERY VERY simple to work on and they don't have any kind of computer or any of that.

The 92-93 trucks with that PCM controlled P.O.J alternator and that leaky intercooler and them small injectors... we don't need any of that!!!

If its not rusty and the body is in good shape, runs good and whatnot, i'd say 4,000 is fair but don't go over that...it is 4x4 so 4k aint bad for a nice truck

 

wouldnt take 4 grand for mine and it needs paint BAD. 160k on odometer.

 

What will you be using the "hobby truck" for? Will it be offroading or drag racing?

If you want it to be a truck that will live on the track, I'd look for a 2wd truck, but if it is going to go offroad, 4wd is obviously needed.

'89 was the 1st year Dodge offered the 6BT in their trucks, and there is no need to look for another year. They're all great.

If you get us some pictures of the truck, we can give you a better idea of what it's worth, but I'd offer the guy 3K (I'm cheap) and see if he bites. If not, go higher.

 

Unless a 2x4 truck is set up for drag racing a 4x4 will beat them. With a 4x4 there is no tire slip with street tires. 2 wheel peelers need help with traction.

 

Richie O- 1989 was the first model year, but they came out well before Sept 88. Our farrier way back when got one of the first ones, and I know for a fact he had it in the summer time- July or August- of 88.

The newer and older trucks have their pros and cons. My personal favorite is the non-intercooled 91s- later style grille (easy to add intercooler of your choice), the (in my opinion) better injectors and pumps (though the 93 pumps did farily well), not as much emission stuff, so they were a little easier on fuel. Plus, the governors on the older pumps were set up for more bottom end torque, which I'm sure contributed to the MPGs.

 

Non intercooled trucks run friggin awesome with some pump tweaks, thats all there is to it.

Non i/c for life here at my house. Saves you money because you don't have to buy injectors to get over 300HP.

 

True, but if it is only his play truck, I would assume he would set it up right for a drag truck, if that's what he wants to do with it. Either way, it would be fun.

 

Guys are running 13's and what not with 2wd's. grant it they have lockers and welded rears etc.

c12h26 welded his rear and runs slicks and it gets like perfect traction and runs low 13's.

The sale is next thursday. I have a friend that works for the company that is holding the sale so I`ll have an inside track on anything wrong with the truck. I`m hoping with it listing a topper on it that the body will be in great shape( no farm or logging ) As far as why I want the truck, I wanted to put a cummins in a ford but my engine deal fell through. Second choice was to find a first gen. and restore it. When I look at it this one it might not be the one , but I`ll have fun looking. If it`s a really nice truck I`m willing to pay a little more then it`s worth .I`ve found out from other projects that it`s much better to start with a solid starting point.
