Will California smog diesels in a couple of years?

I was at the auto shop this afternoon and the guy behind the counter said they are talking about smogging diesels in a couple of years here in CA. Is that true? If it is I am in big trouble because I have a straight exhaust and mods. It will be big $$$$ to put it back.

If you have info please post links to legislation. Also how far back are they going to go? I have a 97 CTD.

Actually, California is talking about making all Diesels conform to 2007 or newer standards.

If that is the case, you Cali. guys are in for some serious $$ retrofits, if it even possible for a mechanical injected truck to do.

I believe they have already mandated big trucks and off road do that by 2014, small diesels can't be far behind in the land of fruits and nuts.

Ya but in BC you can get out of aircare with a pickup by raising the gvw to 5001 at the insurance office. Liscensing fees are about a $100 but you save some from not going to aircare.

partially true, this is from the "Cali" DMV website..."starting in 2010 diesel-powered vehicles manufactured after the 1997 model-year that have a gross vehicle weight rating of less than 8,501 pounds to be in the biennial smog check program. Just checked my door sticker and my GVWR is 9,900 pounds. So, bomb away boys and girls if you care too.

Akita, this is not through Cali. legislature yet. It is being instituted for heavy trucks and off road vehicles first.

I can just see it being extended to small and medium duty diesels next. One of the articles I read about it mentioned they wanted to go to all diesels, but I cannot remember if it was a CARB official or a Legislator.

And whatever cold Cali. gets, the rest of us in these wannabe Cali. state usually get next.

If it becomes mandatory to smog diesel pickups here in CA, for sure it won't affect the older years. No way. Just doesn't make sense and people wouldn't stand for that.

You would think people have more common sense than that, but Cali. has shown precious little common sense.

I sure hope you are right, because this stinking state would have legislation going through the week after you guys got it passed.
