Where to pick up set of 4.10s?
Where to pick up set of 4.10s?
I just bought a 96 that had 37s and a 4 inch lift. The guy is taking the tires and lift off, but leaving the 4.56s in there. I plan on going with a lorenz industries bilstein leveling kit with 35s, but that will still push too many R's. I would like to swap out the yukon 4.56s for a set of 4.10s. I need to find someone to do the install, but first I need to find the gears. Anyone have a good idea where to pick up a good set of gears for a good price. I don't know the first thing about swapping gears. Any input is great for me!
Maybe you could look for a dana 70 (if its a 2500 auto... I think I remember you saying that) at a junkyard or something with 4.10s already in it? Then again, you are going to need two sets since I'd imagine that truck has 4WD...
Yeah otherwise when you put it in 4WD you're tires will be turning at different speeds... and that would be very hard on you're drivetrain, tires, and not to mention hard to drive b/c it would be skipping all over the place.
Are these truck 9.25" front and rear. Ebay has sets for around $150 new. Is this a hose job? Are some gears better than others? I will be getting the truck with the 4.56s and 31" tires. Will switching to 35s make it a good daily driver. A gear ratio chart I pulled up says that with a 35" tire and a 4.56 you are going about 45 mph at 2000 rpm. This is definitely not gonna cut it.

Search the web for Randy's Ring and Pinion. He used to sell complete center sections, ring & pinion sets, and anything needed to setup a differential to whatever application was needed. I heard good things about his parts and service while reading muscle car mags, with his rears living in high HP Hemi drag cars.

X2, Randy's is great to deal with. Don't forget, if you're having gears installed, you're going to need overhaul kits that come with shims, and bearings. R & P installs can be kind of pricey. Make sure the shop installing the gears knows what they're doing.

I tried a couple of local guys and they all said they weren't too interested. I may have to renegotiate my price with this guy if this is going to cost me $1000 or better. I called AAMCO (transmission guys) and the guy told me it would cost around $500 to do the front and rear. I thought this sounded too good to be true. He acted like they do it all the time. Another guy I talked to at Top Line Transmissions said it would take $350 for the front and $350 for the rear. I think I'm gonna have him throw the original 3.55s that I'm getting with the truck back in it. That should save me some trouble. Would the truck with 3.55s and 35s tow worth a crap? It would mostly be a pavement pounder, only towing occassionally.
Thanks

3.55s and 35" tires would tow just fine, unless it was over 15K load. Many people go with 19.5 tires/ wheels, which puts them in the 33-35in tire range. I would just go that route (OEM 3.54). The Cummins has enough low end torque to handle it. The tranny, if auto, is another story. If you dont like the way it tows, drop a gear. The 3.54s are nice for MPGs.

dpuck,
That's kind of what I wanted to hear.
I will probably go with lorenz industries bilstein leveling kit and 33s. Then I will be safe and shouldn't make the 3.55s too much taller. I appreciate the info. How does $800 sound for a gear swap, front and rear?!
Thanks

Wideglide,
As a street bob owner, I honestly can't answer that question. I just called around to a few places where the individual sounded competent in the area of changing gears and setting backlash. Then I just asked what the "out-the-door" cost would be and that was as far as I went. I'm sure someone on here will know the answer to your question.
